Doubles pair and singles senior take Tigers to the wire
OXFORD, Miss. -- Vying for a singles and doubles regional title Monday, Ole Miss sent three Rebels into the ITA South Regional Championships, held at the William Galtney Indoor Tennis Center, located along Manning Way.
The 31st-ranked pair in the country, senior Alexa Bortles and freshman Isolde de Jong delivered a dynamic performance against defending National Champions Eden Richardson and Jessica Golovin of LSU, fighting valiantly and taking the duo to a 10-7 tiebreaker.
In singles, senior Tea Jandric, rated No. 92 in the latest ITA Rankings, faced off against Richardson.
"Not the way we wanted to finish the Regional, but all in all, this was a very successful weekend of us," head coach Mark Beyers said. "I think all of our women made some very significant strides and we're looking forward to finishing up the fall season in strong fashion over the next few weeks."
After falling behind in the first set 3-0, de Jong's serve powered the duo to the first point, handing them momentum. She then placed a short forehand perfectly in the shallow front court to give the Rebels' a 40-15 advantage, and after a pair of faults put the two squads at deuce, Ole Miss pulled through, picking up their first game of the set.
The Rebels carried energy, taking two of the next three games before dropping the set 6-3.
Bortles and de Jong regrouped, picking up the first game of the second set with a quick 40-Love score. The Tigers took the second game, but Bortles delivered a decisive game point on a short volley just across the net to give the Rebels the 2-1 advantage.
Ole Miss carried a 4-1 lead through the second set, finishing 6-4 and forcing a tiebreaker against the draw's top-seeded duo. The Rebels fell behind early 6-1, but threatened late, narrowing the gap to two before ultimately falling 10-7.
In the singles competition, after suffering from a 6-0 defeat in the first set (despite being at deuce in each of the final two games), Jandric ignited, nearly sweeping the second set at 6-1.
The two traded points throughout the next set, but Richardson found herself on the winning end of game points the first three contests. Jandric battled, taking two frames, but dropped the finale 2-6 and surrendered the singles title to Richardson.
RESULTS:
No. 7 Eden Richardson/Jessica Golovin (LSU) def. No. 31 Alexa Bortles/Isolde de Jong, 6-3, 4-6, 10-7
No. 38 Eden Richardson (LSU) def. No. 92 Tea Jandric, 6-0, 1-6, 6-2
