Rebels Threaten No. 11 Florida in Front of Record-Breaking Crowd

10/19/2018 | Volleyball

OXFORD, Miss. --   In front of the largest at-capacity crowd in Gillom Athletics Performance Center history (1,059), Ole Miss challenged No. 11 Florida, falling 3-1 (25-20, 21-25, 21-25, 15-25).

Junior Emily Stroup continued to lead the offensive charge, registering her 13thdouble-double of the season with a match-high 20 kills and 15 digs. The performance was her 8th20-kill/10-dig game of the season.

Classmate Nayo Warnell topped the squad defensively, registering a career-high four solo blocks as part of a six rejection day. Sophomore setter Lauren Bars turned in her first double-double of the season, registering 37 assists and a season-high 14 digs.

The Rebels delivered a thrilling opening stanza, pulling out a 25-20 victory over the Gators. The two squads traded points through the early parts of the frame, but Ole Miss capitalized on three rejections from Warnell and  Bars to take a 6-0 run and 21-15 lead in the set.

The Gators attempted a comeback, putting together a pair of two-point runs, but a late frame kill from Warnell placed Ole Miss at set point, and a slam from sophomore Leah Mulkey handed the Rebels the frame, their first over Florida since 2016 (also in Oxford).

Ole Miss continued with momentum, using a trio of 3-0 rallies to take control of Set 2 as late as 18-17. The squads continued to challenge, enduring 14 tied scores. The Gators put together four consecutive points to regain control at 23-20, then evened the match with back-to-back kills to take the frame 25-21.

Florida ignited in Set 3, securing the first three points of the set, then using a 4-0 run to take a 9-4 lead early. The Rebels chipped away late, taking four of the last five points of the game before befalling on a service error to drop the set 25-21.

The Gators continued to carry control, taking the first 10 of 11 points in Set 4, building a lead as big as nine points before stealing the match 3-1 after a 25-15 final frame.
