Women's Tennis Fares Well on Day 1

AUBURN, Ala. -- Coming off their ITA South Regional runner-up finishes, the trio of senior Tea Jandric, junior Alexa Bortles, and freshman Isolde de Jong continued with successful swinging on the first day of the Marliss Gruver Fall Invitational, held on the campus of Auburn.
Jandric, rated 92ndin the country in the ITA Preseason Rankings, downed Georgia State's Daniela Ramirez, batting through with a 6-1, 3-6, 1-0 (7) decision in Flight 1. She'll face the flight's top seed in Estela Perez-Somarriba (Miami), who cruised to victory in the opening round 6-2, 6-1.
Bortles and de Jong also carry a national ranking of 31, and cruised to victory in the opening round of doubles action with an 8-3 victory over Ulyana Shirokova and Yuna Ito of Miami. They face the duo of Ngounoue/Plipuech from Kansas, who won their first round matchup 8-5.
The pair also competed through singles play, dropping their opening rounds in three-set sessions. De Jong battled with Oklahoma's Camila Romero, the "most accomplished recruit" in Sooner program history, falling 2-6, 7-6(1), 1-0 (4) in Flight 3. Bortles lost to conference foe Thea Rice of Arkansas, presenting a potential comeback after falling 6-1 and powering back to take the second set 5-7 before falling 1-0(7) in the tiebreaker in Flight 4.
Sophomore Sabina Machalova also competed, pairing up with Jandric in doubles play and dropping a 6-3, 6-0 singles match in Flight 1.
Day 2 begins with doubles matches at 9:00 a.m.

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. -- Senior Anna Vrbenska led the Rebels on the opening day of the Robert Alison Invitational, hosted by league-foes Alabama.
Vrbenska cruised through her singles flight, turning in a 6-3, 6-4 decision before a swift 6-2, 6-1 win over league competitor Moka Ito from Alabama. She continues through the draw Saturday, facing the flight's top seed (and 14th-ranked player in the country) in Clemson's Marie-Alexandre Leduc.
Doubles partner Allie Sanford was also successful in the opening round singles draw, battling through a grueling 12-10 tiebreaker to defeat ECU's Lisa Hofbauer 7-5, 4-6, 1-0. After dropping her second round in identical 6-2, 6-2 sets to Clemson's Sydney Riley, Sanford is slated to compete against fellow SEC competitor in Alabama's Cortina Pou.
The two will also compete again in doubles, taking on rivals in Mississippi State's Lizariturry/Roberts.
The doubles duo of juniors Tereza Janatova and Cameron Kriscunas also picked up a victory, defeating Wisconsin's Rompf/Markham in an easy 6-2 decision. They'll take on South Alabama's duo of Fujioka/Pasanen Saturday. Janatova and Kriscunas have won two doubles draws during the fall campaign, including the 'B' flight of the South Regional.
Doubles play begins at 9:00 a.m. on Day 2, with the third round of doubles immediately following and singles play slated for a 12:30/1:00 p.m. start.
