Women's Tennis Wraps at Alabama; Finals Play at Auburn Sunday

AUBURN, Ala. -- 
 A trio of consolation semifinal victories highlighted Ole Miss Women's Tennis on Day 2 of the Marliss Gruver Fall Invitational, held on the campus of Auburn University.
 
Sophomore Sabina Machalova defeated conference foe Martina Zerulo of Arkansas by way of a swift 6-1 first set and battling out the second at 7-6(6). Machalova carries the highest singles national ranking for the Rebels, coming in at 53 in the first ITA Rankings Release.
 
Machalova will face Oklahoma's Martina Capurro in the consolation final, slated for a 9 a.m. first serve Sunday. 
 
Freshman Isolde de Jong also took on a Razorback, emerging with a 6-3, 7-5 victory, while doubles partner Alexa Bortles kept the streak alive, defeating Georgia State's Andrea Stanescu with an identical 6-3, 7-5 result. Both will join Machalova in their flight's consolation finals. 
 
de Jong takes on Georgia State's Eva Chivu, while Bortles will face Kansas' Julia Deming. Both matches will begin at 9 a.m. The pair fell in the main flight's doubles final, dropping an 8-5 decision to fellow SEC competitors Graver and Russo from the hosts, Auburn after defeating Kansas 8-6 in the semis.
 
Senior Tea Jandric partnered with Machalova, where the two battled ranked foes Perez- Somarriba/Roldan from Miami before trumping with an 8-7 victory. They then fell in the consolation final to another Hurricane duo in Shirokova/Ito, 8-5.
 
Jandric was slated to compete against Perez-Somarriba in the main flight single's semifinal, but withdrew due to injury. Perez-Somarriba ranks third in the country in singles play.

Final: Graver/Russo (Auburn) def. #31 Bortles/De Jong, 8-5

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. --  The Roberta Alison Invitational came to a close Saturday, with senior Anna Vrbenska emerging from her singles flight victorious by way of walkover at the Alabama Tennis Stadium. 
 
Vrbenska was slated to compete against the 14th-ranked player in the country in Clemson's Marie-Alexandre Leduc. Vrbenska also carries a national ranking at 122. 
 
Junior Tereza Janatova battled against conference rival Mississippi State, winning her first set 7-5 before succumbing to a 6-3 second set and falling in a 10-2 tiebreaker. 
 
Janatova and partner, fellow junior Cameron Kriscunas, fell in the Flight 2 finals against Tulane's Alvaro/Fabrizi 6-2. 
 
Kriscunas fell in her consolation round to Troy's Tingting Pei, and Alabama's Alba Cortina Pou defeated senior Allie Sanford in a pair of swift decisions. 
 
Sanford and Vrbenska also were defeated in the main draw's consolation final, dropping a 6-4 contest to Cortina Pou and partner, Luca Fabian.
