Postgame Quotes vs. ULM
10/6/2018 | Football
Ole Miss 70, ULM 21
OLE MISS HEAD COACH MATT LUKE
On the team's excitement:
"Yeah, it was good for some of the guys who don't get to play very much. It's what they were cheering about. Just guys that sacrifice, that are unselfish. We talked about Armani (Linton) going from offense to defense. Just being unselfish.
On guys who finally get the reward to play:
"It's a great reward. Those guys are here at every practice, every workout, and they put in a lot of time."
On the school record and establishing something early:
"We talked all week about consistency. I thought we had shown flashes, even in the bad loses, but you have to be consistent. I was proud of Jordan's performance, his decision making, when to throw it, and when to hand it. And I was very proud of Matt Corral. We left him in there with the starters for about two drives and what he was able to do, making the decisions and showing his ability to run the football. I thought that was really good by Matt."
On getting Corral reps and seeing what he can do:
"That's the most important thing is getting in there and running the offense, and he was able to do that in the second half on two scoring drives. I was really happy he was able to get in there and get some legitimate experience."
On refocusing for this game:
"It was everywhere. Just a refocus on being consistent. I just felt like having a mental toughness to repeat good action over and over again, I think that's what we have to do."
On the defense bending and not breaking:
"Yeah, no doubt. I felt like we were giving up a few too many yards but when I looked up, they had not scored very much. So, we were bending but they didn't break. Good that we came up with a big turnover down there in the red zone and like you eluded to a couple fourth down stops. We're really proud of them."
On the rest of the season:
"I think we will watch this tape and move forward, but I think for us it's just all about us getting better, us all being consistent, about us doing the little things right, and when it comes time to make plays our play makers making plays, and we did that today."
OLE MISS QUARTERBACK JORDAN TA'AMU
On how he felt today:
"I felt great. Just the way our offense went out there every drive and executed. We scored almost every drive so I was happy. The way everyone performed today was great."
On the running game:
"They (The ULM defense) were so keyed in on our running backs because of how successful they have been over the past few weeks. It was my time to pull it so I did. I saw a few open lanes and took off with it. The dangerous thing about our offense is that everyone out there can run. If you are on defense you have got to cover everybody on the field."
On Scottie Phillips:
"Scottie is an all-around threat. He can catch, run and block. He can do all the things a running back needs to be able to do. That is a major key to our offense. The way he is smart with the ball and still drives down is just awesome to have him on our side. That is a dangerous threat for other defenses."
On Matt Corral:
"He is awesome. He came in today's game going 10-for-10 passing. Matt did exactly what he needed to do and what coach wanted him to do. He went out there and showcased himself while playing a wonderful game. He is great in practice too. The type of leader on and off the field. He also showed today that he can run and throw the ball effectively. I am excited for him."
OLE MISS QUARTERBACK MATT CORRAL
On the big rush:
"My roommate DeMarkus Lodge had a key block in that run. Just executing the offense like Longo (Offensive Coordinator Phil Longo) wants us to, by doing my job and that run was part of it. The offensive line did their part, Lodge did his part and that is the outcome of that."
On WR blocking:
"There were a few key blocks. Alex Weber (WR #85) on a pass I threw to Elijah Moore (WR #8), Alex took out his corner and he took out the slot. He deserved that touchdown honestly. All around the receivers are doing great blocking."
On being patient:
"I look at it as a win-win situation. Jordan teaches me on and off the field about this offense and what to do to be successful. Only good things come when you are patient so I am putting my head down, not listening to anything anybody has to say. I have been doing just that and everything is going to work out the way it is supposed to and I am going to be happy."
On confidence:
"You can't let the moment get too big. It can't be too high and it can't be too low. Find that medium and maintain that. I think that is one of the hardest things to do because you want to be excited. It works for some people but the way my head works, I feel like if I do that I might jump the gun too early."
OLE MISS DEFENSIVE BACK ARMANI LINTON
On getting ready for defense:
"It has been pretty different trying to get back adjusting to defense. Really, just relearn the scheme and play fast. I knew with all of the injuries we have had on defense it kind of ran through my mind but when C.J. went down, it was real. On Monday they called me and I told them at the end of the day I am about helping this team out and I am all for putting another game in the win column."
On the defensive mindset:
"It is not really a big change because I believe that how you do anything is how you do everything. I prepare for my opponent like I do on offense just like I did defense this week. I watched a lot of film. This week I had to watch a lot from fall camp mainly. Just so I could back on the swing of things."
On playing no matter where:
"I came in to this season with one mindset. I wanted to help this team no matter if it was offense, defense or special teams. Getting moved to offense I was all for it. When Scottie was out there rushing for 200 yards, I was all for it. I was probably his biggest cheerleader. Then I was out there making plays on special teams. Now, I got my opportunity to make plays on the defensive side. I am just grateful for those opportunities and for my coaches to want to put me in the game."
ULM HEAD COACH MATT VIATOR
On how the game went:
"We didn't start out playing the way I thought we could. Offensively, we never really got into a rhythm. We're disappointed because we thought we could score with them early. We drove the ball in the first half and had some opportunities to put points on the board, but we just continued to make mistakes. From an offensive standpoint, I thought we could move the ball and we did. We just didn't finish enough drives."
On the defense:
"Defensively, even when we thought we had a stop they jumped over us and caught the ball. Give Ole Miss a lot of credit; they have a good football team."
On freshman quarterback Colby Suits:
"We didn't want to be in that situation for sure, but we wanted to give Colby Suits an opportunity. With the new rule this year, allowing freshman to play in four games, we want to get him in there for a few series'. He's going to be a really good player."
On the second half of the season:
"We're just not playing good, and that's what's frustrating. I can't put my finger on it. I thought we were really ready to play today. We had a lot of energy to start the game, but again, we just didn't make it happen. We've got to go back to the drawing board and continue to work. We've only played half the season, so we've still got a lot of football left. We just need to play better. If we do, we'll be okay."
ULM WIDE RECEIVER MARCUS GREEN
On playing in front of his family:
"It meant a lot to play in front of my family and friends in my home state and 30 minutes from my hometown. Win or lose, today was going to be special.
On the offense:
"We had a frustrating day offensively. We moved the ball well until we got into the red zone. There we just seemed to hit a road block. We've had issues all season, finishing drives inside the opponent's 30. We simply have to find ways to finish drives and score touchdowns."
On his punt return:
"The punter meant to kick the ball to the boundary, but it hung toward the middle of the field. I had space to make the catch and move up field. The blocking set up well for me. I took the ball toward the sidelines to see what I could do with it."
