Ole Miss in Sixth Place Heading into Final Round
NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Ole Miss men's golf team completed the second round of the Intercollegiate at The Grove Monday afternoon. The Rebels shot a second round 293 (+5) in the Music City and are 13 strokes back of first place South Florida (284-280—564).
"Certainly not our best day today as a team," said head coach Chris Malloy. "We just looked a little sloppy and didn't have anyone get hot to save us like we usually do. I know that this group is eager to get out on the course tomorrow and improve on today's round."
The Ole Miss lineup was led by a pair of 72s from senior Braden Thornberry and sophomore Cecil Wegener. Thornberry shook off his opening 18 with a four-stroke improvement in round two to move up the leaderboard, tallying three birdies and three bogeys. After a 3-under 69 to start the tournament, Wegener played the 7,368-yard course at level par to sit in a tie for 11th and just five shots off the lead. The Ridgeland, Mississippi, native played a mistake-free back nine today, parring the first eight holes before making birdie at the par-5 18th.
Redshirt-freshman Charlie Miller fired a 74 (+2), dropping back to even par through 36 holes. With the help of four birdies throughout his round, he remains in a tie for 20th.
Josh Seiple and Jackson Suber posted rounds of 75 (+3). Starting 2-over through the first seven holes, Seiple responded with an eagle on the par-5 seventh followed by a birdie at No. 8. The senior Rebel made the turn at 1-under, but could not find a birdie coming in and had to sign for an over-par round.
Individually, Jack Gnam shot a 70 (-2) for the best round of the day by an Ole Miss golfer. Round one co-leader Beau Briggs delivered his second straight under par round (71), two shots back in a tie for third. Freshman Sarut Vongchaisit birdied the final three holes to post a 71 (-1) of his own and move to 4-under for the tournament.
The Rebels begins their final round tomorrow morning with Miller on the first tee at 10:34 a.m. CT. For updates throughout the final round, follow the Rebels on Twitter at @OleMissMGolf.
