Junior Guard Scores Career-High 28 as Rebels Advance to Emerald Coast Classic Championship

NICEVILLE, Fla. – A last-minute jersey issue forced Breein Tyree to switch from number 21 to number 4. The junior guard may want to keep wearing 21 as he scored a career-high 28 points to lead the Ole Miss men's basketball team to a 78-70 win over Baylor in the Emerald Coast Classic. With the victory over the Bears (3-2), the Rebels (3-1) advance to the championship game to face Cincinnati tomorrow night (Nov. 24) at 6 p.m. CT on CBS Sports Network.

Tyree scored 17 of his 28 points in the second half, including the final nine to put the game away for the Rebels. The Somerset, New Jersey, native finished 6 of 11 from the floor while knocking down 13 of 17 from the free throw line. Bruce Stevens recorded season highs in points (17), rebounds (8) and minutes (33). Blake Hinson and KJ Buffen added nine points apiece to tally career highs.

As a team, the Rebels forced 18 Baylor turnovers and limited the Bears to just 2 of 18 (11.1 percent) shooting from beyond the arc. Ole Miss held a 23-9 advantage in points off turnovers, while also converting 13 second chance points to Baylor's four. Tristan Clark paced the Bears with 27 points on 11 of 13 shooting.

Baylor scored the opening bucket, but the Rebels countered with a 9-0 run to go up seven. Aside from a contested three that banked home, Ole Miss continued on the attack. Another 9-0 run stretched the lead to 18-5 with 13:16 remaining in the first half. Eight of the team's first 18 points came courtesy of Tyree.

The Bears scored the game's next 10 points to make it a one-possession affair. Ole Miss ended its three-minute scoring drought thanks to a Tyree steal. The junior guard sliced down the lane before dishing off to Devontae Shuler for the fastbreak deuce. Back-to-back baskets by Buffen grew the cushion back to nine, 28-19.

Baylor rallied back to take its first lead since the opening bucket, 39-38, but it was the Rebels who scored the last five points of the half to take a 43-39 lead into the locker room. Following a pair of free throws, Stevens nailed a three from the top of the key just before time expired to push the lead to four.

The first half was a free throw shooting contest as the two teams took a combined 35 free throws thanks to 27 first half fouls. Terence Davis drew two fouls early, and the team's leading scorer had to sit for the final 10 minutes of the half. The Rebels made their first 13 free throws before finishing 16 of 19 for the half. Meanwhile, Baylor converted 14 of 16 at the charity stripe. Ole Miss forced 11 turnovers in the opening 20 minutes to hold a 16-5 advantage in points off turnovers.

Tyree began the second half with a bang, hitting a pair of threes to give him 17 on the night. The Rebels maintained the lead by converting key jumpers and forcing more Baylor turnovers. With Ole Miss ahead by two, Hinson found room in the paint for a soft jumper before draining another one from the wing. The consecutive baskets increased the advantage to 65-59 with 6:58 to go.

The Rebels still led by six when Terence Davis, fighting foul trouble most of the night, came up with a big block on a Baylor three-point try. On the other end, Tyree raced down to hit a baseline jumper to give Ole Miss its biggest lead since early in the first half. Putting the game on ice, Tyree scored the Rebels' final nine points with seven of them coming from the free throw line.

Ole Miss will face Cincinnati tomorrow night (Nov. 24) in the Emerald Coast Classic championship game. Tipoff is slated for 6 p.m. CT on CBS Sports Network. The matchup will be a rematch of the inaugural Emerald Coast Classic championship game (2014), when the Rebels emerged with a 66-54 victory.
