BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- After breaking two separate program records over the weekend against back-to-back ranked opponents where she averaged 6.14 kills a set, Ole Miss Volleyball's Emily Stroup has been named the SEC Offensive Player of the Week, announced Monday by the conference office.
The honor is the first weekly award of her career, and the first offensive plaudit for Ole Miss since the 2016 campaign (Kate Gibson, Kathryn Cather). Stroup joins current classmate Nayo Warnell as the only current Rebels to earn the league's player of the week awards (Defensive POTW, Oct. 2, 2017).
"We are all very proud of the hard work that Emily puts in every day," head coach Steven McRoberts said of his stalwart. "She is having a great season and this week she truly earned this honor."
Stroup ignited Friday against No. 25 Tennessee, registering her 1,000thcareer kill en route to a new single-match tournament record with 31 kills across four sets. The 31 was the most scored on the Volunteers this season, and the third most recorded in an SEC match (first among four set contests).
The Fargo, N.D., product hit at a stellar .393 in the match, and Friday marked the second time this season Stroup has posted 30 kills or more, and her ninth match registering at least 20.
She followed that performance on Sunday with another 12 slams, breaking the single-season record for kills in the process. She posted six during the first frame, the last one of the set totaling her 475thof the season.
Stroup now boasts 1,019 kills in her career and 481 on the season, ranking second in the country. She is the only player in the SEC this season to record at least 20 kills, 20 digs in a match, which she did in back-to-back contests earlier this season against Arkansas and LSU.
Stroup and the Rebels face LSU in Baton Rouge Wednesday in their first midweek of the 2018 conference slate.
