Rebels Use 28-0 Run to Down Mocs 90-70

12/16/2018 | Men's Basketball

OXFORD, Miss. – An incredible 28-0 run early in the second half flipped the game in favor of Ole Miss, as the Rebel men's basketball team rallied for a 90-70 victory over Chattanooga Sunday night at The Pavilion. Trailing by six with less than 17 minutes to go, the Rebels (8-2) held the Mocs (5-7) scoreless for nearly seven minutes en route to scoring 28 straight points and earning their fifth consecutive victory.

Ole Miss also shot over 50 percent for the fifth game in-a-row, setting a new Pavilion record with a 61.5 percent (32 of 52) clip. The dynamic duo of Terence Davis and Breein Tyree scored 40 of the team's 90 points with 20 apiece. Davis also added team highs in assists (7) and rebounds (5), while Tyree sparked the big run with 18 of his 20 points coming in the second half. The junior guard was limited to eight minutes in the first half due to foul trouble, but he brought a spark coming out of the locker room.

Bruce Stevens recorded 15 points off the bench on 6 of 7 shooting. Junior center Dominik Olejniczak scored seven points, while proving to be a big threat on the defensive end of the floor with team highs in steals (3) and blocks (2).

Chattanooga had three players in double figures led by David Jean-Baptiste with 15 points. The Mocs found success from beyond the arc throughout the game, going 11 of 21 (52.4 percent) from long range.

Holding an early 12-8 lead, an 8-0 Ole Miss run bumped the cushion to a dozen. D.C. Davis started the spurt with a three before Stevens added five consecutive points. The Rebels kept Chattanooga at a distance, maintaining a 12-point lead, 33-21, with 5:23 remaining in the opening half.

The Mocs rallied to close first half, taking the lead thanks to an 18-4 run. Chattanooga knocked down four 3-pointers during that span, including a triple from Jerry Johnson Jr. right before the buzzer. Going into the locker room, Ole Miss trailed 39-37.

Both teams shot 59 percent in the first half. The three seniors led the Rebels with Stevens tallying nine points, Terence Davis scoring eight and D.C. Davis adding six points. Olejniczak chipped in with seven points as well.

The second half started off as a 3-point contest. Chattanooga drilled a pair from long range to build a six-point advantage before the Rebels flipped the script quickly with four threes of their own. Terence Davis began the barrage with a tightly-contest three, slicing the margin in half. After a rejection by Olejniczak on the other end, Tyree sank a transition three from the wing to tie the game at 45 apiece. Back on the other end of the floor, Olejniczak came through again with his defense. A steal by the seven-footer turned into another Tyree three to give Ole Miss its first lead since late in the first half. After another stop, a Shuler three from the corner turned a six-point deficit into a six-point advantage 51-45 and forced the Mocs to call a timeout.

Coming out of the break, Ole Miss' run didn't stop. Shuler produced a three-point play the old-fashioned way by drawing a foul before Tyree tallied five more points. Keeping the visitors scoreless for 6:38, a remarkable 28-0 run put the Rebels up 22. Another Tyree three closed the streak, giving Ole Miss a 67-45 cushion with 10:43 left in the contest.

Although the dramatic run eventually came to an end, the Rebels maintained a comfortable lead for the remainder of the contest. Outscoring the Mocs 53-31, shooting 63.3 percent (19 of 30) and holding Chattanooga a 35.5 percent clip (11 of 31 ) in the second half, Ole Miss kept its winning streak alive with the 20-point victory.

Next Friday (Dec. 21), Ole Miss travels to the Music City to face Kermit Davis' former team, Middle Tennessee. Tipoff from Bridgestone Arena in downtown Nashville is set for 7 p.m. CT. The game will be broadcast on CBS Sports Network's Facebook page.
