Rebs Down UTEP 7-1 to Complete Two-Game Sweep
4/21/2018 | Softball
EL PASO, Texas - For the second game in a row, Ole Miss (25-18) took an early lead and got the offense rolling late to defeat UTEP (18-28) 7-1 on Saturday, completing the two-game sweep over the Miners.
Kaitlin Lee got the start and despite not having her best stuff, was able to hold UTEP to a single run, stranding eight Miners on base in her three innings. Anna Borgen came out of the bullpen and was perfect in her four innings, earning the win.
Just like the previous day, Ole Miss got things started quickly with a run in the first. Elantra Cox took the first pitch of the game up the middle for an infield single before swiping second. Brittany Finney then delivered a clutch two-out single, bringing Cox around to open scoring.
The Rebels added a run in the third as Amanda Roth led off with a single to center, advanced on Cox's single, made her way to third on Kaylee Horton's sacrifice bunt and came home on Dylinn Stancil's sac fly to center.
UTEP got the run right back in the bottom half of the inning as Lee plunked a batter with the bases full. However, the righty was able to get the next better looking to end the inning, stranding three runners on base.
Ole Miss struck right back in the fourth loading the bases with one out before Roth brought Alex Schneider home with a sacrifice fly to deep left field.
From there, Borgen took command, setting down the Miners time and again to earn her fourth win of the season.
The Rebs poured it on late, plating four in the seventh to put the lead well out of reach. One run came home on an error before Schneider launched a no-doubt dinger to left that brought in the final three.
Borgen went back to work in the home half, collecting three quick outs to wrap up the two-game sweep.
Ole Miss returns home for a trio of midweek games in Oxford. The Rebels will host a doubleheader against Alcorn State on Tuesday before welcoming back UT Martin to the Ole Miss Softball Complex for a game on Wednesday. All three games will be broadcasted on SEC Network +.
