WINSTON SALEM, N.C. - It looked like old times on the lower courts of the Wake Forest Tennis Complex Thursday afternoon, as 17th-ranked Tim Sandkaulen and Fabian Fallert played their first match together since March 11, downing the 23rd-ranked Michigan duo of Runhao Hua and Alex Knight in straight sets.
With Fallert out three weeks due to injury, Sandkaulen teamed up with Grey Hamilton at No. 1 doubles and then Fallert paired up with Finn Reynolds when he returned to the lineup. Both had success and helped the Rebels win some crucial doubles points on their way to the Sweet Sixteen.
In their first match back together in over two months they looked very much the part of a top 20 team. Serving well and returning well, Sandkaulen and Fallert took the opening set 6-2. After the Michigan duo held to start the second set, the Rebel pair held and then grabbed the first break of the set. They never relinquished their lead, winning 6-2 to improve to 10-4 overall.
At the Net with Assistant Coach Devin Britton...
"Tim and Fabi looked extremely sharp today for having not played together in a while. They brought the energy early and often, which is a huge piece in the doubles. Every team in this tournament is tough and for them to win a match with that kind of score line is a big confidence booster. It's only going to get tougher tomorrow, but they will be ready to go again."
Next up...
Sandkaulen and Fallert will face the No. 4 seeds, Johannes Ingildsen and Alfredo Perez of Florida in the round of 16 Friday.
