Rebels Look to Replace Wunderlich and Gleeson in 2018
This is the fifth of an eight-part position-by-position preview series looking ahead at what the Ole Miss Rebels' depth chart might look like for the 2018 season.
Last season, Ole Miss had the luxury of two senior special teamers in kicker Gary Wunderlich and punter Will Gleeson, but the Rebels now look ahead to the next generation of specialists.
At kicker, Luke Logan and Patrick Nasiatka are in competition to replace the Rebels' all-time leading scorer in Wunderlich. Logan was 2-of-3 kicking field goals while Wunderlich was down with an injury a season ago.
On the flip side of the coin, Mac Brown has been tabbed to replace Gleeson at punter. The sophomore out of Eden Prairie, Minnesota, punted five times and averaged 42.2 yards per punt in 2018.
Junior Jaylon Jones, a preseason All-SEC kick returner by Athlon, expects to handle kick return duties again in 2018 after finishing third in the SEC with 25.0 yards per return last season. Jones has shown big-play ability in the return game, including a 97-yard return for a touchdown last year.
At punt returner, two freshmen have been competing at the position in fall camp. With last year's punt returner, A.J. Brown, limited due to injury in the fall, Elijah Moore and Tylan Knight worked in and showed off their speed and reliability in the return game.
Top Performers: Gary Wunderlich (17-21 FG made. Long of 49), Jaylon Jones (31 kick returns, 25 yards per return, one TD)
Returning in 2018: Luke Logan (So., 1L), (Isaac Way., SQ), Patrick Nasiakta (So., SQ), Jack Propst (So., 1L), Cole Becker (Fr., RS), Kamden Darney (Jr., SQ)
Newcomers in 2018: TBD
Departures from 2017: Gary Wunderlich (graduation), Will Gleeson (graduation)
