Rebel Soccer Suffers Heartbreaking 2-1 Defeat at Minnesota
8/24/2018 | Soccer
OXFORD, Miss. – Ole Miss (2-1) went toe-to-toe with a game Minnesota (3-0) squad deep into the Minneapolis night but the Golden Gophers came out on top in the dying seconds, scoring with just over a minute remaining in extra time.
The Rebels got out in front early, netting a set-piece goal in the eighth-minute to take an early lead. Madisyn Pezzino sent in an in-swinging corner that slipped through the clutches of the Gopher keeper and Ella Frischknecht pounced, toeing the ball into the net.
From there Minnesota mounted a relentless attack but the Ole Miss defense held strong, successfully defending six corners and fending off 12 shots to maintain the 1-0 advantage heading into the break.
In the second half, Minnesota came out of the gate swinging, with Celina Nummerdor scoring an equalizer in the 52nd-minute off a loose ball from seven yards out.
CeCe Kizer nearly reclaimed the lead for Ole Miss in the 71st-minute, swiping the ball off of a defender's foot and using her pace to break away. The senior attempted to cut back onto her right foot but the Gophers were able to clear before she could get back on the ball. A few minutes later, Haleigh Stackpole broke free on goal but the Gopher keeper denied the freshman.
The Rebs continued to own the final 15 minutes or so of the second half, creating chance after chance, but were unable to finish any of them off. 90 minutes weren't enough to separate the two sides, sending the match into extra time.
As the seconds clicked off in the second half of extra time it seemed almost certain that the two teams would settle for a draw. Instead, the Gophers came up with the late winner as a shot off the post fell to the feet of Megan Gray, who scored on the open goal.
Ole Miss returns to action on Sunday, taking on Murray State in Oxford. The match will be streamed live from the Ole Miss Soccer Stadium on SEC Network +.
