Volleyball Goes 1-1 to Start Season

Rebels Defeat Virginia, Fall to No. 21 Iowa State

AMES, Iowa– The Ole Miss volleyball team kicked off the 2018 season Friday, going 1-1 with a 3-1 win against Virginia in the morning, before falling to No. 21 Iowa State 3-0 at the Iowa State Invitational here at the Hilton Coliseum.
 
The Rebels conclude action in the tournament Saturday at 12 p.m. against Oregon State.
 
Senior Caroline Adams reached a milestone in the morning match, recording her 1,000thdig. She became the seventh player in in the rally era at Ole Miss to reach 1,000 digs.
 
Match #1: Ole Miss vs. Virginia – W, 3-1 (20-25, 25-20, 25-23, 31-29)
In their first match of the 2018 season, Ole Miss defeated Virginia 3-1 in a tightly contested affair. 
 
Virginia took the opening set 25-20, but the Rebels rebounded to grab the second 25-20 and a close third 25-23 to go up 2-1. 
 
Looking to close out the match in four, the Rebels led by five (19-14) late, but the Cavaliers went on a 5-0 run to get within one. Tied at 22-22, the Rebels won two straight points to gain their first match point at 24-22. Virginia wouldn't go away though, tying it up at 24-24. The Cavaliers saved a total of five match points and even garnered a set point at 26-25, but freshman Aubrey Sultemeier notched one of her 11 kills in the match to erase it. At 29-29, a ball handling error by Virginia set up the Rebels' sixth match point, and then Iowa native Caitlin Wernentin and Sultemeier combined on the stuff block to end it.

·The Rebels improved to 21-21 in season openers and have won six straight
·This marked the first meeting between Ole Miss and Virginia
·Junior Emily Stroup picked up where she left off in 2017, posting a double-double with a match-high 21 kills and 11 digs. She also added three service aces and 3 blocks for 26.0 points
·Sophomore Leah Mulkey got her first career start at Ole Miss, starting at right side
·Freshman Aubrey Sultemeier earned the start at middle blocker and finished with 11 kills on a .333 clip and 6 blocks
·Senior Caroline Adams notched her 1,000thdig in the win, finishing with 24 digs (6.0 D/S)
·Junior Nicole Purcell added 3 aces and 15 digs off the bench
·Junior middle blocker Nayo Warnell also finished with 3 service aces as the Rebels tallied 10 for the match
 
Match #2 Ole Miss at Iowa State – L 3-0 (21-25, 11-25, 19-25)
The second match of the day pit the Rebels against No. 21 Iowa State, who advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament in 2017 and finished 22-7. The Cyclones had three players with double-digit kills and hit .433 for the night, while the Rebels finished at .104. 
 
Set one went back and forth in the early going, but Iowa State built a four-point lead late, 22-18 and closed out it 25-21. Ole Miss tried a different lineup in the second set, but the Cyclones hit .500 in the second set on their way to a 25-11 win to take a 2-0 lead. 
 
With their backs to the wall, the Rebels looked to try and force a fourth set, but Iowa State jumped out to a seven-point lead and never got closer as the Cyclones finished it out 25-19 for the final 3-0 score.
 
Match #2 Quick Hits
·The Rebels are now 0-2 against Iowa State
·It marked the first non-conference ranked opponent the Rebels have faced since 2011
·Emily Stroup posted her second double-double of the day with 12 kills and 12 digs
 
Next Up
Ole Miss concludes the Iowa State Invitational Saturday against Oregon State, another team who made the NCAA Tournament in 2017.
