Team Finishes in Fourth, Suber Claims Runner-Up

KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. – The Ocean Course Invitational came to a halt after the second round Tuesday, as the final round was canceled due to mandatory Hurricane Florence evacuations in South Carolina. With the tournament shortened to 36 holes, the Ole Miss men's golf team fired a final round 287 (-1) to move up three spots and finish fourth (299-287--586) to open the season.

Rebel freshman Jackson Suber stole the day with a second round 67 (-5) at the Ocean Course, the lowest round of the day in the 81-player field to claim runner-up individually. Suber had five birdies on the very tough back 9, finding success on the par 3's, including a birdie on the famous 17th hole. The Tampa, Florida, native played the par 3's and par 4's a combined 4-under, which led the tournament.

Braden Thornberry finished in the top-10 with Suber after a second round 71 (-1). The senior carved up the par 5's, making birdie on three out of the four today. Throughout the tournament, he played the par 5's 5-under to pace the field. The finish moves Thornberry that much closer to the school record top-10 finishes for a career, and is just two shy of Darren Cole's (1983-86) record of 26.

Charlie Miller and Chip Getz, led the team in pars with 26 and 24, respectively, while senior Josh Seiple was second on the team in birdies behind Suber's eight. Miller's two-day total of 147 (74-73) earned him a top-20 finish (T-17) in his collegiate debut.

Cecil Wegener had the second best round of the day for the Rebels, firing a second round 69 (-3) while competing as an individual.

The Rebels posted the second-best round of the day to improve by 12 shots from its opening round, finishing nine shots back of first place College of Charleston. The host school claimed the title after winning a playoff over SMU.

"I am very proud of the way we hung in and fought on the back nine today," said head coach Chris Malloy. "We had a couple of big numbers and unforced errors but really fought hard to still fire an under-par round. It was awesome for Jackson to get a good round under his belt. I'm sure that he will use this as a confidence booster going forward."
