Rebels Fall Behind Early and are Unable to Rally

OXFORD, Miss. – Ole Miss struggled to hold serve with the pace and physicality of Memphis Sunday night in Oxford, falling behind early and falling 2-0 at the Ole Miss Soccer Stadium.

It took the Tigers (8-1) just over three minutes to grab a lead as Marie Lavasseur made a run in behind the Rebel (7-3) back line and Stasia Mallin found her with a perfectly weighted lofted cross, leaving Lavasseur a mere tap in past Marnie Merritt in goal.

Memphis continued to dominate possession for much of the first half, though Ole Miss did start to find its footing with about 15 minutes left before the break. The Rebels best chance of the half and perhaps the night came on a feed from Sydney Michalak to Channing Foster, however, the sophomore was unable to make clean contact, scuffing her shot wide.

The second half was largely a back-and-forth affair, with whichever team that scored next looking the most likely to earn the result. Unfortunately for Ole Miss, Memphis earned that claim as Serena Dolan delivered a bending shot to the far post from 17 yards out, leaving Merritt no chance.

With a two-goal lead in hand the Tigers were able to control possession and run out the clock, handing the Rebels their first non-conference loss at home since 2016.

Kickers
• The match was Ole Miss' annual Kick Cancer game, with the Rebels' teal kits being auctioned off following the match. All proceeds will be donated to Shauna's House.
• Memphis' two goals were the first Ole Miss has allowed at the Ole Miss Soccer Stadium in 2018 and just the second and third in the past two seasons during non-conference play.
• Marnie Merritt kept the Rebels in the contest with four saves on the night, one shy of her season-high.
• The 17 shots produced by the Tigers are the second most Ole Miss has allowed this season, behind the 21 surrendered at Minnesota.
• CeCe Kizer led the Rebels with four shots. However, none of the senior's attempts found their target.
