Marnie Merritt’s Season-High Eight Saves Not Enough to Take Down the Vols

OXFORD, Miss. – After falling behind 1-0 after the first half Thursday night, Ole Miss gave No. 19 Tennessee its best shot in the second half but was unable to find the back of the net, falling 2-0 to the Volunteers.

The Rebels (7-4, 1-1 SEC) came within inches of taking an early lead in the 4th-minute as Haleigh Stackpole delivered a bending free kick to the near post that was denied by an excellent diving save from Shae Yanez. After that early chance, the Rebels spent much of the first half in their defensive third.

After missing on an earlier chance directly in front of goal, Bunny Shaw didn't miss a second time, cleaning up a rebound in the 22nd minute to put Tennessee (7-1-1, 1-1 SEC) up 1-0.

Thanks to a tremendous effort from Marnie Merritt, the Rebels kept the deficit to within one heading into the break. The senior keeper nearly matched her season-high for saves in the opening 45 minutes alone, making four stops.

Ole Miss nearly equalized on the counter attack right before the halftime break but Sydney Michalak's attempt was palmed away by Yanez.

Merritt was again on display early on in the 2nd half, denying back-to-back shots in front of goal by UT to keep the deficit at one.

After that early barrage, the Rebels settled into the second half and started to get some numbers forward themselves. Channing Foster had the best look of the night for Ole Miss in the 70th-minute, having her point-blank shot saved by Yanez.

With the Rebels chasing the match and switching to a three-defender back line, Tennessee put the game away in the 87th minute on a rocket from Meghan Flynn that gave Merritt no chance to make the save.

Ole Miss will have a chance to rebound quickly on Sunday, heading the The Planes to take on No. 9 Auburn at 2 p.m.

Kickers
