Coach McRoberts Weekly Presser #4

9/17/2018 | Volleyball

Ole Miss head volleyball coach Steven McRobertsย met with members of the media Monday as part of the fall sports weekly press conference... McRoberts discussed the Rebels rough week and looks ahead to SEC play.

Opening Statement

"We had a rough week.ย  Coming into last Tuesday, we had won 12 in a row at home and were playing a Memphis team who had won 4 or 5 in a row, but a down year for them as a program. With the coaching change, he is doing a nice job there with turning them around, but it was a match going into that we felt we should handle. We came out just a little bit flat. Part of the issues as you're building a program and as your team is starting to have some success is sometimes, you get a little comfortable. Our team admitted to that with the preparation. That is something that we as a staff need to do better, I need to do better as a head coach to be a little more on top of us, in those sorts of situations."

On significant injuries...
"We lost a player against Memphis- Lauren Bars, one of our setters in our two-setter system. She went down in the third set with a significant injury and to show her toughness, she's over on the sidelines, she got hit in the mouth, and she's asking if she going to be able to go back in. She was taken to the hospital after that. Her toughness and competitiveness left the gym that night. We fought hard lost in the fifth set, and really had to change up a lot of things team wise, strategy wise as we went into the weekend, because even at full strength, Austin Peay and Rice on the same day was going to be a task for us.ย We also had Nicole Purcell go out on the weekend [against Austin Peay]. We were out a couple of starters at times but I thought some of the role players came in and did a nice job."

On players stepping up...
"Nayo Warnell was All-Tournament; she hit .467 on the weekend, and it showed that when we were passing well, and we could get her the ball that we were doing well and will continue to. Jordan Fate went from a two-setter system to a one and really did a nice job in a tough situation playing over the weekend. Emily Stroup continues to just rack up the points... she is second in the nation in kills and just carrying a huge load for us. We have a few players that are coming along nicely..."

On the SEC opener against No. 4 Florida
"It is our annual opening match at Florida. It seems like it's our opening weekend opponent every single year, and we need to learn to start embrace that a little more. We are going to have a lot of good opportunities from that. Our RPI doesn't come out for a couple of weeks, but our projected RPI -everybody in the conference besides Mississippi State- is projected to be Top 100. We will have lots and lots of opportunities over the next few weeks to get those quality wins like when we beat Oregon State and Ohio State. We are looking forward to opening up SEC play this week."
