Rebels Outlasted by Auburn, Fall 3-1 Sunday
9/30/2018 | Volleyball
OXFORD, Miss. — Although the Rebels earned their first set victory in the young conference season, Ole Miss volleyball dropped a Sunday affair with Auburn, falling 3-1 (18-25, 21-25, 25-18, 15-25) in Gillom Athletics Performance Center.
The Rebels slip to 10-7 (0-3 SEC) on the year, while Auburn improves to 8-6 (1-3 SEC).
Ole Miss had three players with double-digit kills, paced by junior Emily Stroup's 15, while the duo of middle blockers Bayleigh Scott and Aubrey Sultemeier each added 10. The mark tied a career-high for Scott, while Sultemeier fell one shy of hers. Sultemeier added three blocks, aided in the defensive effort by senior Delaney Gallagher, who also added three rejections, a career-best.
Scott hit for a .533 efficiency, while the pair of defensive specialists Nicole Purcell and Caroline Adams added 11 and 14 digs, respectively.
Two early 4-0 rallies for the Tigers proved problematic for Ole Miss, who struggled to narrow the gap and fell behind by as many as eight points. A late run from the Rebels provided some excitement, but they were unable to pull off the comeback and dropped the opening frame 25-19.
The exact opposite scenario set the scene for Set 2. The two squads played cat-and-mouse, going through six ties. The Rebels used an 4-0 run to take the lead early, and then another four-point combination to come within one at 15-14. The squads traded points late, before Auburn snuck through with a 25-21 victory.
The Rebels ignited in the third frame, building up to a seven-point lead late in the set at 21-14. After an early 4-0 run gave Ole Miss an 8-4 advantage, Ole Miss continued to pressure on both spectrums, never allowing more than two consecutive Auburn points for the remainder of the frame. A strong late-set surge from Stroup was crucial, who registered three of the Rebels final four points to take the frame 25-18 and stay alive.
The Tigers fired back, taking a 10-5 lead in the fourth set and maintaining a lead by as many as seven to win 25-15 and take the match 3-1.
