Rebels Head to Nashville for Vanderbilt Invite

1/17/2019 | Track and Field

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Ole Miss track & field hits the road for Nashville for the first of two trips to Vanderbilt this indoor season, competing in the Vanderbilt Invite on Jan. 18-19.

Competition is set to begin at 4 p.m. CT on Friday afternoon, and will resume at 10:30 a.m. CT on Saturday morning.

NOTES
• Ole Miss head coach Connie Price Smith enters her fourth season at the helm. Price-Smith, who was the head women's coach for Team USA at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio, is in her 18th season overall as a head coach.

• Price-Smith's coaching staff all returns as well, with associate head coach Andre Scott (jumps, women's multis), assistant coach Anthony Acklin (sprints, hurdles), assistant coach Brian Porter (pole vault, javelin, men's multis), assistant coach John Smith (throws) and director of operations Sasha Leeth all returning for their fourth seasons at Ole Miss, with associate head coach Ryan Vanhoy (distance) entering his sixth year as a Rebel.

• Indoors, the Rebels return two Second-Team All-Americans, four Second-Team All-SEC members, and three members from the 2018 SEC All-Freshman team.

• Ole Miss senior Derek Gutierrez opened the season back in December, running at Indiana's Hoosier Open. Gutierrez ran a 13:58.82 in the 5K, putting him No. 9 in the NCAA this year and No. 6 all-time at Ole Miss.

• Sophomore Peyton Weissmann opened the season with a career-best clearance of 5.20m (17-00.75) in the pole vault, making him one of just four Rebels to have ever cleared 17 feet both indoors and outdoors. He joins Kyle Wallace, Baker Vinci and Olympic bronze medalist, Sam Kendricks.

• Weissmann's height currently puts him No. 16 in the NCAA.

• Sophomore Shey Taiwo set a new career-best in the women's weight throw, picking up the torch where All-American Janeah Stewart left off. Taiwo threw 20.83m (68-04.25), currently the 11th-best throw in the NCAA and the third-best in Rebel history.

• Rebel men's sprinters Andrew Raspo and Elijah Dryer both started off the season with career days at UAB. Both ran PRs of 6.81, which puts them into a tie for 12th all-time at Ole Miss and No. 58 on the NCAA list.

• Freshman sprinter Brandee Presley impressed in her debut as well, running 7.46 in the 60-meter dash. Presley currently ranks No. 29 in the nation and No. 11 all-time at Ole Miss.
