Professional Development Program is in its 16th Year

ATLANTA – Ole Miss senior Shandricka Sessom and graduate manager Ariel Massengale have been named to the 2019 class for the WBCA and WeCOACH's "So You Want to be a Coach" program.

Sessom, a native of Byhalia, Mississippi, is in her fifth year at Ole Miss as a redshirt senior. Sessom is one of just 13 Rebels to ever score more than 1,300 points and haul in 500 rebounds, currently standing at 1,312 points and 565 rebounds in 117 career games played in a Rebel uniform. Sessom was named to the Preseason Second-Team All-SEC team and the SEC Community Service team in each of the last two years.

Massengale is in her second year on the Ole Miss staff as a graduate manager after four years as the starting point guard at Tennessee. Massengale helped lead the Lady Vols to four SEC titles (two regular season, two tournament) as well as four NCAA Tournament berths with three trips to the Elite Eight and another to the Sweet 16. Massengale was part of legendary Tennessee coach Pat Summitt's final recruiting class.

Each member will participate in the three-day workshop with speakers provided by WeCOACH on April 3-5 in conjunction with the WBCA Convention in Tampa Bay, Florida.

The objectives of the "So" program are to increase the understanding and application of skills necessary to secure coaching positions in women's basketball, increase the understanding and awareness of competencies necessary for success in coaching, introduce female basketball players to coaches and administrators, and raise awareness of the existing talent pool of female basketball players who have a passion and interest in coaching the game of women's basketball.

Qualified candidates must have exhausted their final year of basketball eligibility at a four-year institution or have graduated within the past year. In addition, the candidate's head coach has to nominate them and must be an active WBCA member. Each participant is selected based on her academics, contributions to women's basketball on and off the court, professional resume and a written recommendation from their head coach.

The WBCA "So" program has graduated 874 participants in its 16-year history.
