Ole Miss will now play in the consolation match slated for 8 p.m. Saturday
LOS ANGELES, Calif. -- Ole Miss Men's Tennis dropped its opening contest of the ITA Kick-Off Weekend at the Los Angeles Tennis Center, falling 4-0 to San Diego.
The Rebels (2-2) will now play in the consolation match Saturday at 8 p.m. CT, with opponent still to be determined between No. 7 UCLA or Indiana.
The Toreros were quick to take advantage, picking up the doubles point via victories at the first and third positions. The Ole Miss pair of senior Fabian Fallert and sophomore Cotter Wilson were in the midst of a battle at second doubles, even at 3-3 against the 12th-ranked duo in the country in San Diego's Joel Gamerov and August Holmgren.
Gamerov was eager to get a point on the board, handing the Toreros a 2-0 lead after identical 6-2, 6-2 victories over freshman Karlo Kranic. The match was Kranic's first dual competition of the spring season.
Fellow rookie Simon Junk and senior Filip Kraljevic revved some hope for the Rebs, each picking up their opening set at 7-5 and 6-4, respectively. Kraljevic's prelude came against Holmgren, who carries an individual ranking of #83.
Fallert also fought valiantly, exhausting through a 6-7 (2-7) tiebreaker in the opener.
San Diego built an even further lead after freshman Jan Soren Hain surrendered a 3-6, 4-6 contest.
Things were halted for Junk, Kraljevic, and Fallert after the match was clinched at first singles, when junior Tim Sandkaulen fell to #117 Gui Osorio 5-7, 4-6.
