Recapping the First Week of Spring Practice for Ole Miss Baseball
OXFORD, Miss. – Fresh off a long winter break, Ole Miss retook Swayze Field for the first official practices of the 2019 calendar year over the weekend. As the lineup begins to take shape, Rebels young and old have just weeks to separate themselves from the pack and earn a spot in a crowded lineup full of returning veterans and playmakers from a season ago.
The Rebels competed in two intrasquad scrimmages over the weekend and will continue to hold open scrimmages over the next two weekends before the season officially kicks off on Feb. 15. Fans are encouraged to come and check out the club in the weeks before baseball is back in Oxford with the arrival of Wright State, who will face Ole Miss on the first weekend of the season.
Chase Cockrell, returning after serving primarily as the Rebel DH last year, led all players at the plate with a 5-for-9 weekend, belting two homers in Saturday's scrimmage to give his team the 8-6 edge in the second of two games over the weekend. Sophomore Tyler Keenan continued his red hot streak over from the fall, recording a .500 batting average over the weekend with three singles and an RBI.
Tim Elko, also vying for a spot across the diamond, had a near-identical line, going 3-for-6 over the course of both games, with an RBI and a run to add to his spring scrimmage stats.
On the mound, junior Houston Roth, who has earned his way into the discussion for one of three vacant weekend starting positions, electrified opposing bats in his start during Friday's scrimmage. Roth faced just seven batters in two innings, fanning five and finishing the day with a 0.167 batting average against. Fellow junior Will Ethridge, who has all but locked up the Friday night starter role come February, started for the opposing squad to rival Roth's firepower, and faced the minimum of six batters in just two innings pitched.
A small sample size, but first-year pitchers Gunnar Hoglund, Logan Savell, Jacob Steinberg, and Tyler Myers all did their job in their respective two innings on the mound. None of those four newcomers allowed a run to cross the plate, good for a 0.00 ERA through the first weekend of intrasquads.
The Rebels will operate on a similar schedule in the weeks leading up to opening day. For the week of Jan. 28 – Feb. 3, all practices will begin daily at 2:30, save for an off day on Tuesday, and again are open to fans wishing to get a glimpse of the club. Ole Miss will scrimmage three times this weekend, with games on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday (times TBA).
