Women’s Tennis Dominates First Round of ITA Regional

Ole Miss Finishes 6-1 as a Team in the Main Draws on Friday
Baton Rouge, La. – The Ole Miss Women's Tennis team dominated the opening rounds of Main Draws in the ITA Southern Regional Championships, hosted by LSU on Friday.
Ole Miss swept the opening rounds of doubles to advance two teams to the Round of 16 to be played on Saturday. The Rebels were nearly flawless in the singles Main Draw as well, finishing 4-1.
The No. 17 ITA ranked tandem of Alexa Bortles and Sabina Machalova downed Lauren Gish and Daniela La Fuente of Tulane, 8-3. Seniors Anna Vrbenska and Tereza Janatova edged out Sara Lizariturry and Meredith Roberts of rival Mississippi State, 8-6.
In singles, freshman Isolde de Jong got by host Luba Vasilyuk of LSU with a close first set (7-6) and a commanding second set (6-2).
Janatova and Vrbenska made quick work of their opponents in two sets as well. Janatova dispatched Samford's Cindy Oest 6-2, 6-3, while Vrbenska marched on with a swift 6-0, 6-1 decision over Shevita Aulana of Troy.
Bortles faced Gish in a rematch from doubles, and came up with her second win on the day. The Rebel senior won a huge first set, 7-5 before advancing with a 6-2 win in the second.
Machalova suffered a tough defeat at the hands of Auburn's Taylor Russo. Machalova jumped out to a lead after taking the first 6-4, but Russo turned things around winning 6-4, 6-1 in the last two sets.
In the Back Draw, freshman Grace Anne Jones got past Emilija Dancetovic of Northwestern State, 6-2, 4-6, 10-4 in a seesaw affair.
The regional doubles champions and regional singles champions and finalists qualify for the season-ending Oracle ITA National Fall Championships.
