Postgame Quotes vs. Vanderbilt

10/5/2019 | Football

Ole Miss 31, Vanderbilt 6

OLE MISS HEAD COACH MATT LUKE
On the good feeling in a winning locker room:
"It is. These guys have put in a lot and to see them be happy and to see the smiles on their faces. They know that the hard work is paying off. To see them get better and better each week. It's just a good feeling as a coach to stand in the front of a happy locker room."

On the running game:
"That was pretty good. It's just great to see the freshmen running in the third quarter. You know, breaking off those two big runs, that really was the difference in the game. It kind of got static in the second quarter. The first quarter was pretty good moving the ball. Second quarter we got a little static, but it was to see us come out get a stop right off the bat."

On the young players:
"You know that part of it is fun. But you know you have a responsibility to your fans and to the seniors to go win now and try to put these guys in the right positions. But I think it's rewarding to see these guys grow and get better and better each week."

On the defense:
"The D-Line played really well tonight. They were getting pressure without blitzing. I'm just really proud. They got a shut out in the second half. Keeping them out of the end zone. They played pretty well so credit Coach (Mike) MacIntyre, his staff, and the defense."

OLE MISS DEFENSIVE BACK JAYLON JONES

On his big tackle for loss:
"It was just a good scheme call. I was really just reading the tackle and it showed up just like it does in practice and I was able to make the play."

On the true freshman defensive backs:
"The confidence is getting really high. You can see that they are not thinking as much as they used to. You can just tell that they are just playing football now."

On how the team feels:
"We feel good. Obviously, we can't go back and get those loses but this game was a confidence booster. But were just going to go back and watch film Sunday and keep this confidence rolling."

OLE MISS RUNNING BACK JERRION EALY
On what he said to Snoop Conner after his big run:
"I just said 'hey, it's your time now baby'. I said 'hey, you have to get in the zone, you have to get your first one, so this is your play right here let's go get it.'"

On having fun:
"I'm having lots of fun. The most fun I've ever had in my life."

On his big run:
Once I see a hole is open, I tell myself I have to get to 0 to 100 really quick and thankfully I had someone down field blocking for me, and after that I just had to bob and weave."

 VANDERBILT HEAD COACH DEREK MASON
On what was missing:
"For me, I look at this team and we have good players. But we have young players in key spots in defense. Especially when you talk about the secondary and what happens there in terms of fits and what we have to do. You know we have a couple guys on the edges that defensively need to play better. But the reality is, I tell the guys this when it comes to schemes, everyone has them, but players got to stand up and make plays. You know as I sit down with this football team and watch the film I will start with me. I will take the blame on this game and I will work through every position so we have the best eleven on the field, on every squad touching the field every snap. It can't come down to rotational players that can't function in the heat of the moment. Too much of that will get you beat, even if I have to play guys 65 snaps. I don't want to but if that's what we have to do that's what we will do. I'll dive in, ask my coaches to go all in. And I've already asked the players to go all in because if you don't go all in I have to pull you out."

On player's urgency:
"Absolutely, they have got no choice. Here's what it comes down to: I'm patient but there comes a time you have to draw a line in the dirt and then what you have to do is go. The time has come to draw a line in the dirt and let's go. It's not panic its urgent."

On mentally overcoming big plays:
"This group is mentally tough, but the reality is its like body blows you take enough of them and eventually you want to cave in. Again, they played hard, not well enough, not good enough, and I'm right there with them. I'm never going to cast it on them. I think too many coaches get caught up in doing that. I think you are right in there with them. I got to dig deep now just like they have to dig deep and we have to find the quotation."

On his quarterback struggling:
"I'll have to look at the film. I think we do have to be better. I think the quarterback got flashed off the spot a couple of times and they had some free runner coming and hit us. Obviously, they were toned in to some things but I'll have to take a look at the film and evaluate it all."

On offense missing opportunity:
"I think Ke'Shawn (Vaughn) is running hard. I think there have got to be opportunities for us to take the ball down the field but a couple times we took it down the field its leaking. Its leaking Riley (Neal) gets hit on both opportunities. I mean, you have to be able to keep the quarterback up right. He has to be able go through the progression and read and if you can't then it comes back to the idea you can draw it up, but you have to be able to block it and that's about guys staying in the fight."

On momentum at half:
"I thought defense fought hard in the first half and we really couldn't create a lot offensively. But they gave us a chance with the field goal right before half that that was momentum. I though we would come out and needed to score on that first drive and you don't get it and go through the process of getting hit and letting out a big run and all of a sudden you find yourself leaking.

On trimming the rotation:
"We have enough guys its not about that. It's about the idea that the guys that can functionally do it. What your trying to do is get guy going and off for a fast start but I have to look at everything."

 VANDERBILT LINEBACKER ANDRE MINTZE
On recovering from Ole Miss' big runs:
"We tried to stay in the middle and be indifferent, but to anyone that can take a tough toll. But we were able to come back in the middle to play our game."

On if this game was a wakeup call:
"I think you can learn more from the loss in any situation rather than a win. Granted, we want to win every week, but you learn more about yourself as a team individually and we've got a lot of work to do. That's pretty much it."

On responding to the defense allowing 400 rushing yards:
"Watch the film and learn from it and we will be better next week."

 VANDERBILT RUNNING BACK KE'SHAWN VAUGHN
On the team's mood:
"There is a little panic rightfully so. We all realize we can do better. We just have to come together and play better."

On the potential of the offense:
"I don't know. We haven't never seen it yet. We play well in practice. We will put it together for four quarters. It will be the first time you will see it. I think it would be pretty good then."

 VANDERBILT WIDE RECEIVER KALIJA LIPSCOMB
On what was different today:
"Nothing really different. Just execute the calls."

On John Rhys Plumlee:
"He was able to out run us sometimes. But other than that, it really came down to us executing our call. Staying discipline with our technique which we didn't do consistently."
