Suber Leads Rebels on Day One in Alabama

10/7/2019 | Men's Golf

VESTAVIA HILLS, Ala. – The No. 24 Ole Miss men's golf team completed the first two rounds of the Jerry Pate National Intercollegiate on Monday. Jackson Suber (72-65-137) is in the top-10 individually to lead the way.

The Rebels are in eighth place (286-287—573) after 36 holes and sit at 13-over par.

"These are always long days, but there was plenty of good," head coach Chris Malloy said. "There are a lot of areas that we can clean up. We shot ourselves in the foot too many times with a lot of things that are uncharacteristic of this team that we've seen this year so far. We had two guys who played well at times today and really kept us in it. We just have to regroup, get some rest and be ready to climb up the leaderboard tomorrow."

Suber fired a flawless second round 5-under 65, tying his career low. The sophomore went bogey-free his last 26 holes with 8 birdies and 18 pars. Suber went 4-under on the front nine in the afternoon round, his final nine of the day, including a birdie on the par-4 sixth hole after driving the green. The Tampa, Florida, native concluded his day with back-to-back birdies. He is tied for 10th individually after collectively shooting 3-under on the day.

"Jackson got off to a rough start, which shows a lot about who he is and the caliber of a player he is bouncing back with a 65. I can't say enough good things about the golf he's been playing and continues to play, so we'll look for him to make a run at the individual championship tomorrow" Malloy said.

"The birdie on No. 9 (in the opening round) really gave me momentum and some hope," Suber said. "I kept keeping the ball in front of me, not getting into bad spots, just learning my lesson from the first nine holes."

Vongchaisit carded a first round 5-under 65, matching fellow sophomore Suber for the low round of the day for Ole Miss. The 5-under performance marked a new career low for Vongchaisit, who made two eagles on par 4's in round one. Vongchaisit is tied for 15th on the leaderboard at even-par (65-75—140).

"It always helps when you have two eagles in a round of golf," Malloy said. "Sarut got off to a great start and finished strong with a great putt on No. 18. He didn't quite carry that momentum into the second round, I know he's disappointed there, but he'll bounce back and have a good day tomorrow."

Brody Blackmon, after rounds of 73 and 74, is tied for 38th individually. Jack Gnam sits tied for 43rd going 74-75—149.

Veeti Mahonen is tied for 47th after back-to-back 75s.

The final round begins Tuesday morning with tee times for Ole Miss beginning at 8:50 a.m.
