Senior Earns Three Total Victories in Alabama on Friday
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Senior Ole Miss women's tennis standout Anna Vrbenska tallied three total victories on Day One of the 32nd annual Roberta Alison Fall Classic at the Alabama Tennis Stadium on Friday.
Freshmen Isolde de Jong and Grace Anne Jones were also victorious in the compass-style tournament, which allows players to continue competing despite defeats at any point.
Vrbenska teamed up with de Jong in doubles to begin the day, taking down Anna Makarova and Melissa Pick of Wisconsin, 6-4. The veteran's momentum continued into singles competition with two more victories.
The Podebrady, Czech Republic product took down another Badger in Denise Stoica. Stoica possesses a No. 108 ITA ranking, but Vrbenska was up to the task by claiming a seesaw match, 6-3, 2-6, 6-2. She then powered past Alabama's Isabella Harvison, 6-1, 6-3, in her third match of the day.
De Jong won her first singles match over Thasaporn Naklo of Iowa State, 7-6(5), 6-2. Maryland's Ayana Akli then outlasted de Jong in Friday's conclusion with a 6-2, 6-2 victory.
Jones fell in her opening one-on-one match to South Alabama's Leslie Soto in a tough three-setter. Soto claimed the first set 6-3, but Jones responded with a 6-2 win before falling in the third in heartbreaking fashion, 7-5. The Rebel rookie would recover by downing UT Martin's Aziza Aubin, 6-7(2), 6-0, 6-4.
Vrbenska and de Jong will play Katherine Cao and Aran Teixido Garcia of Memphis, Saturday morning at 10 a.m. The winning pair will play in the Leslie Grossman Draw Finals and the losing team will continue in a consolation match, both at 11 a.m.
Freshmen Victoire de Samucewicz and Jones will take part in two doubles consolations during the same times after falling to Clemson's Ali Despain and Laura Marti, 6-1 on Friday. Singles play will pick up in the early afternoon with all four Rebels competing and Vrbenska looking to remain perfect.
