Freshman Quarterback Earns Conference Accolades After Setting Freshman Rushing Record

OXFORD, Miss. – After setting several rushing records in Saturday's 41-3 win over New Mexico State, quarterback John Rhys Plumlee was named Southeastern Conference Co-Freshman of the Week by the league office on Monday.

Plumlee accounted for 301 yards of total offense, including two touchdowns and 177 yards on the ground, just one yard shy of the Rebel rushing record by a quarterback. His 75-yard run in the first half was the third-longest rush by a QB is Rebel history.

On the very first play of the game vs. New Mexico State, Plumlee surpassed Nico McSwain's freshman rushing mark of 612 yards set in 2005. His two touchdowns also etched his name in the record books for most rushing touchdowns by a freshman in a single season.

In SEC contests, Plumlee ranks third in the conference in rushing touchdowns (five) and fourth rushing attempts (100). The Hattiesburg, Mississippi, native is second in yards on the ground per game (109.4). He's also the first Power 5 QB to rush for 100 or more yards in each of his first three starts since Nebraska's Taylor Martinez and Michigan's Denard Robinson in 2010.

Ole Miss is back in action this Saturday as the Rebels play host to top-ranked LSU. Kickoff is slated for 6 p.m. and will be televised on ESPN.
