Men's Tennis All-American Mondays: Part 6

Part 6 of a seven-part series paying tribute to the rich history of Ole Miss Men's Tennis and their wealth of All-American honors since the program's inception in the late 1920s. Ole Miss has produced 29 All-Americans and garnered a total of 48 All-American honors, including three national champions. Each week without competition, olemisssports.com will look back at these individuals and their incredible accomplishments during their time in Oxford. 

JONAS BERG; 2008, 2009
Jonas Berg became a two-time All-American in 2009 ending the year ranked No. 3 in the nation in doubles and No. 23 in singles. The All-SEC first team selection spent 14 weeks ranked No. 1 in the nation in doubles.   As a team captain, Berg helped the Rebels advanced to the NCAA Elite Eight for the ninth time and earn a final national ranking of No. 4.  He helped lead the Rebels to the SEC regular season championship with an undefeated league record, the SEC Tournament Championship and their eighth straight SEC West title.  In addition, Berg teamed up with Bram ten Berge to capture the ITA All-American Doubles Championship in the fall of 2008.

In 2008, Berg teamed with Erling Tveit to advance to the NCAA Doubles Final, earning All-America honors.  The pair teamed up together for the first time at the beginning of the fall of 2007 and ended the year ranked No. 3 in the nation. Berg and Tveit were also named to the Rolex Collegiate All-Star Team. Berg helped lead the Rebels to the SEC Tournament Championship, the SEC West title, the NCAA Elite Eight and a final national ranking of No. 6. Individually, Berg earned All-SEC first team honors and was named the SEC Tournament Most Valuable Player after going 4-0 in singles and doubles to pace the Rebels to the title.

In his first season (2007) with the Rebels, Berg earned All-SEC honors.  He went  20-1 in dual matches, going undefeated until his last match of the season. He helped the Rebels advance to the  NCAA Sweet Sixteen and win the SEC West title. Berg became the third Rebel in the history of the program to go undefeated (11-0) in the SEC. 

Berg graduated from the University of Mississippi in 2009. 

JONAS LUTJEN; 2012, 2013
Jonas Lutjen became one of the top players in the country in 2013 and enjoyed an outstanding career for the Rebels.  During his four years, Lutjen helped lead the Rebels to two SEC West titles and four NCAA appearances, including a Sweet Sixteen showing. In 2013, Lutjen earned All-America honors for the second time in doubles and first time in singles.  He was one of just nine players to earn the honor in both singles and doubles The ITA Southern Region Senior of the Year teamed with Nik Scholtz to reach the NCAA Final Four in doubles and ended the year ranked No. 15 in singles and No. 4 in doubles.  Lutjen was one of only six players in the nation to finish ranked top 20 in singles and top 10 in doubles.  He helped lead the Rebels to their 10th SEC West title, their 20th consecutive NCAA appearance and a final national ranking of No. 10.   Lutjen was one of three Rebels to earn All-SEC honors, making the first team.  He posted a 31-11 overall record, 14-6 at No. 2 singles and teamed with Nik Scholtz for a 20-7 overall record, 15-3 at No. 1 doubles.

Lutjen became the 28th All-American in the history of the program in 2012.  He ended the year ranked No. 44 in the nation in singles and No. 10 in doubles with Scholtz. He reached the singles semifinals at the SEC Indoor to start the spring and earned All-SEC honors for the first time in his career.  Lutjen helped lead the Rebels to their 19th straight NCAA appearance in 2012 and went 3-0 in singles and doubles to help lead the Rebels to the Sweet Sixteen for the 16th time.  With a 24-13 overall record, 14-9 in dual matches, Lutjen finished 7-4 in the SEC at No. 3 singles.  He teamed with Nik Scholtz for an 18-6 overall record, 8-3 at No. 1 doubles.

 Off the court, Lutjen made the SEC Academic Honor Roll three times and graduated in 2013 with a degree in Marketing.  
 

NIK SCHOLTZ; 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015
Nik Scholtz became the first four-time All-American in program history and the 39th all-time in men's tennis NCAA Division I history, capping a great career in 2015. He led the Rebels to their 22nd consecutive NCAA appearance and also became the first Rebel to be named to the All-SEC First Team all four years. Scholtz finished his career ranked No. 19 in singles and posted 11 nationally-ranked wins, including five against players in the final top 20.

Scholtz enjoyed an outstanding year in 2014, becoming the fourth Rebel to be named SEC Player of the Year and the first to be named SEC Freshman and Player of the Year in his career. He finished the year ranked No. 14 in singles, marking the third consecutive year to finish inside the top 20 in singles. Scholtz was named to the All-SEC first team for the third straight year and earned the No. 1 ranking in the ITA Southern Region. He helped lead the Rebels to their 21st consecutive NCAA appearance advance to the second round. Scholtz advanced to the round of 16 in singles at the NCAA Championships for the third time and finished the year with an overall record of 27-7, 15-1 at No. 1 singles.  He posted a 9-1 record in the SEC.

In 2013, Scholtz earned All-America honors in both singles and doubles. He was one of just nine players to earn the honor in both singles and doubles, ending the year ranked No. 17 in the nation in singles and No. 4 in doubles. Scholtz was one of only six players in the nation to finish ranked top 20 in singles and top 10 in doubles.  He helped lead the Rebels to a final national ranking of No. 10, their 20th consecutive NCAA appearance and 10th SEC West title, while earning All-SEC first team honors for the second year in a row.  Scholtz teamed with Jonas Lutjen to reach the NCAA Final Four in doubles and was also seeded at the NCAA Singles Championship for the second year in a row.  He posted a 20-9 overall singles, 12-6 at No. 1 and teamed with Lutjen for a 20-7 overall record, 15-3 at No. 1.  Off the court, Scholtz made the SEC Academic Honor Roll and the Dean's Honor Roll.

Scholtz became the 26th All-American in the history of the program and the only freshman in the nation in 2012 to be named All-American in singles and doubles. Scholtz also became the second Rebel freshman to earn All-America honors. In his first season, Scholtz was named the SEC Freshman of the Year, the ITA Southern Region Rookie of the Year and reached the NCAA Elite Eight in singles.He became the first Rebel to be named the league's top rookie. Scholtz ended the year as the second highest ranked freshman in the country at No. 14 in singles. He also ended the year at No. 10 in doubles with Jonas Lutjen.

Playing No. 1 singles and doubles, Scholtz was one of only two freshmen on the All-SEC first team. He helped lead the Rebels to the NCAA Sweet Sixteen for the 16th time. Scholtz posted a 21-9 overall record, 14-7 at No. 1 singles and teamed with Jonas Lutjen for an 18-6 record, 8-3 at No. 1 doubles. He led the Rebels to the SEC Tournament Semifinals for the 15th time in school history and was named to the SEC All-Tournament Team.

Scholtz graduated from the University of Mississippi in May of 2015.


GUSTAV HANSSON; 2016
Gustav Hansson became the 29th All-American in the history of the program in 2016, while leading the Rebels to their 23rd straight NCAA appearance and clinching the team's first-round win. Hansson reached the NCAA round of 16 in singles and finished ranked No. 33 in the nation with a 27-11 record.

In 2017, Hansson earned All-SEC first team honors and finished the year ranked No. 22 in singles. He helped lead the Rebels to their 24th straight NCAA appearance. After earning All-SEC second team honors as a freshman, Hansson made the All-SEC first team as a sophomore in 2016 and tied for the second best record in the league at 9-3. He became the fourth player in program history to earn All-SEC honors in each of his first two years. Hansson defeated 11 nationally-ranked players and clinched five wins on his way to earning the ITA Southern Region Player to Watch Award. Success didn't stop on the court for Hansson, as he was one of just eight players in Division I tennis to earn All-America honors and be named an ITA Scholar-Athlete.
