Rebel Defensive Coordinator Up for Award Honoring College Football’s Top Assistant
LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – Ole Miss defensive coordinator Mike MacIntyre is among the 41 nominees for the 2019 Broyles Award, the Frank & Barbara Broyles Foundation announced Wednesday.
The Broyles Award, which honors the nation's top assistant college football coach, will announce a winner on Tuesday, Dec. 10, in Little Rock, Arkansas.
A 29-year coaching veteran, including five seasons in the NFL, MacIntyre returned to Oxford for his second stint with the Ole Miss program before the start of the 2019 campaign. In his first season back for the Rebels, MacIntyre has helped turn around an Ole Miss defense that ranked towards the bottom of the SEC last season.
The Rebels are allowing 23.9 points and 397 total yards per game in 2019, compared to 36 points and 483 yards last season. The Rebels currently rank 26th in the NCAA in rushing defense, allowing 122.7 yards per game.
Ole Miss has held five opponents to under 70 yards rushing this season, including limiting New Mexico State to just 66 yards on the ground in the Rebels' win over the Aggies. In Weeks 2, 3 and 4, the Rebels held their opponents to 61, 66 and 60 yards, respectively. It was the first time since 1999 that Ole Miss had allowed 70 or less rushing yards in three straight games.
The Broyles Award was established in 1996 to honor legendary Arkansas head coach Frank Broyles. Coach Broyles had a track record of producing some of the most successful assistant coaches in college football history.
The selection process includes the Football Writers Association of America (FWAA), a college football hall-of-fame selection committee and current college head coaches.
This year marks the fourth time the Frank & Barbara Broyles Foundation has presented the award. Proceeds from the 2019 Broyles Award support the mission of the Broyles Foundation; to provide education, support, and resources to Alzheimer's caregivers.
