Derrick Nix, Jason Pellerin and Austrian Robinson Meet with Media

OXFORD, Miss. – Ole Miss football welcomes the No. 1 team in the nation for a key Southeastern Conference matchup on Saturday at 6 p.m. CT at Vaught-Hemingway Stadium.

Running backs coach Derrick Nix, tight end Jason Pellerin and defensive lineman Austrian Robinson met with the media Tuesday to preview this weekend's contest against top-ranked LSU.

LOUISIANA'S OWN
Saturday's meeting with LSU will be one of the biggest games of the season for everyone on the Rebel roster, but especially for New Iberia, Louisiana, native Jason Pellerin.

"The politically correct answer would probably be 'No, every game is the same,' but I'm human," Pellerin said. "Being from Louisiana, LSU is a school you grow up watching all the time. Everyone in Louisiana supports them or a team close by. This game's definitely special. Considering it being my last home game as an Ole Miss Rebel.  It's a great opportunity for us. And they're the No. 1 team in the country, so this game's special for that reason alone. Have to go out there and make the best of this opportunity."

There's plenty to play for on both sides of the field. LSU is currently in the driver's seat to win not only the SEC West and book a trip to Atlanta, but also to secure a spot in the College Football Playoff. For Ole Miss, wins over the last two games of the season would lock the Rebels into the bowl picture.

"It definitely has a lot on the line for us and for them," Pellerin said. "We have to go out there and earn some respect. Everyone around the facility knows we're a few plays away from being a 9-1 team, and we can play like it. This team coming in, they're No. 1, but we have a lot to prove. Knocking them off would be a great respect-gainer for us. We just have to play to the best of our ability and do our job."

SLOWING JOE
One of the keys to making that happen will be slowing LSU's potent passing attack. The Tigers, led by Heisman Trophy candidate Joe Burrow, are No. 2 in the nation, averaging 379.3 yards per game through the air.

"Just have to make sure we do our thing," Robinson said. "Everyone loves to try to make plays, just fit in right and do your job. After watching how Auburn played against us, somewhat similar with us. I feel like we can get them."

To slow the Tiger air attack, the Rebels will look to generate as much pressure as possible on Burrow, which starts up front with Robinson and Co. LSU could be without several key O-Line pieces in Austin Deculus, Saahdiq Charles and Dare Rosenthal. But no matter who lines up across the field, Robinson and the Rebels will do whatever they can to disrupt the LSU offense.

"Some of their O-linemen are down too, so that's a plus," Robinson said. "Then just watching them, we can definitely affect him and pressure him, that's a big part of it."

STAYING GROUNDED
While LSU has looked to the air for success on offense, Ole Miss' calling card has been the ground game. The Rebels lead the SEC in rushing and rank 14th nationally at 247.4 yards per game. The Rebels are still uncertain as to whether or not they'll have the services of their first-string back, Scottie Phillips, who missed last week's game with an ankle injury.

"Still day-to-day," Nix said of Phillips. "He didn't practice Tuesday. We're hopeful we'll get him back for this game. He's starting to feel better, starting to move around some, but he's still a question mark for right now. Hopeful to get him out there at least two days of practice this week."

Whether Phillips is in or out, Nix is confident in the guys who are available in the running back room. Jerrion Ealy and Snoop Conner both have found great success as their freshman seasons have gone along, including combining for 180 yards rushing and three touchdowns last week against New Mexico State.

"Jerrion Ealy, you already knew he was a fast guy, but you see him running stronger in between the tackles," Nix said. "You see him breaking tackles and gaining more confidence, understanding exactly where we want the ball to go. Game experience. Nothing is better than getting out there and playing. Snoop as well. You already knew he was a physical guy, but you've seen some flashes of him using his speed and using his natural running ability, being a blocker, helping on special teams. He's another product of getting out there and actually playing."
