Postgame Quotes vs. LSU
11/16/2019 | Football
LSU 58, Ole Miss 37
OLE MISS HEAD COACH MATT LUKE
"We didn't play very well in the first half. Offensively, defensively, we just didn't play very well. Some of that might have been them, but we didn't finish drives on offense. We dug ourselves in too deep of a whole. They did come out and battle. Offensively, we got the run game going in the second half. We got a couple of turnovers and got back in it. We had opportunities to cut it to a one score game right there, but I'm just disappointed that I don't think we played our best. They are a good team, they caused some of that. They are really good on offense."
On the rushing game:
"Guys making plays and attacking the whole field in different areas. We were running the ball wide with our backs and then we had pulls off of it with John Rhys (Plumlee). Credit our offensive staff. We had a good plan going in, it's just a shame that we didn't get it going earlier in the first half. We knew they were going to score some points, we just didn't score enough in the first half."
On John Rhys Plumlee:
"He's getting better. He's getting better every game. He made a mistake on the under throw. He may have had the slant on the underneath, but I think he is seeing better. The game is coming to him. He's not pressing as much. I see him getting better. He obviously has a bright future. He is very gifted. He sees things nicely. That comes naturally for him."
On the senior class:
"It's hard to put into words what these guys have been through. These fifth-year seniors, they were redshirting in the Sugar Bowl. What these guys have fought through and continued to battle through shows they're a very resilient bunch. I'm personally grateful for everything that they have done."
OLE MISS QUARTERBACK JOHN RHYS PLUMLEE
"Even though we put up 37 points, we still left so many opportunities out there that we could have capitalized on."
On the rushing game:
"It showed how much of a team effort it was. It comes down to the little stuff like when Braylon Sanders had that block when I got to the edge on one of my touchdowns."
On the vision:
"The fact that anyone in this offense can make a big play goes to show how special this team can be. A lot of people look at the record and say we are not good, but we are building something and are very close."
OLE MISS WIDE RECEIVER ELIJAH MOORE
"We just stepped up. The first half we came out slow, the second half we picked it up. We should have played how we played in the second half for the whole game."
On being the number one receiver:
"I'm blessed and grateful. It's not an easy task, so whenever my number is called, I have to make the play."
On the touchdown catch:
"Matt (Corral) checked a different route and I just read the defense based on leverage. He put some air under it and I got to it."
On blocking as a wide receiver:
"It's not really a challenge. We say it in our room all the time: no block, no rock. It kind of all goes together. As long as we drive down the field and score, everybody is going to be fine."
LSU HEAD COACH ED ORGERON
"I'm proud of our football team. 714 total yards of offense, 489 passing, 225 rushing. Joe (Burrow) broke a record tonight, so did Ja'Marr (Chase). We did an outstanding job on offense. Obviously, (John Rhys) Plumlee did an outstanding job, their QB, running the ball. We couldn't stop him, but we won the football game. We came here to win the football game, and we won it by 21 points. It wasn't pretty, but we did it after a big win last week. I'm proud of our football team and the way they prepared. We're going to get better. I'm looking forward to playing Arkansas next week. We're 10-0 and I'm very proud of that."
On what made Ole Miss effective:
"Their wide receivers were running the counter. The QB read and stuff like that. We were a man short sometimes and sometime we were just missing tackles. They were running the sweeps to the outside. They faked the reverse one time, we bit on it, and they took it up the right side. And their quarterback runs, we couldn't stop their quarterback runs."
On players expectations:
"I have to remind them to enjoy the win. Let's keep our feet on the ground. Our object is to win the game. We won it by 21 points, and obviously when you don't play well on defense at LSU, nobody's feeling good."
On Joe (Burrow) adjusting in the pocket:
"I thought he was on fire, especially in the first half. He made a lot of plays and extended some plays with his feet. He's a good athlete. We could probably run the zone read a little more, we just don't want to do that."
On defensive issues:
"I need to look at it. Obviously 400 yards rushing and over 500 yards offense. You don't want that. We need to look at it. See on film where we went wrong. Schematically, personnel wise, technique, whatever it may be. The bottom line is when you win games, you kind of pick things apart."
On Joe (Burrow's) performance:
"I think he was pressured a little bit. They pressured him a bit and it was very unlike him to have those two interceptions in the second half."
On Ole Miss:
"We expected a fight. The first half was easier than I thought it would be. I thought we controlled them well in the first half, and obviously in the second half they started making plays. We had to fight and the turnover hurt us. It was a 60 minute battle and we won by 21 points.
LSU QUARTERBACK JOE BURROW
"We had 700 yards of offense and everyone is upset in the locker room. I shouldn't say the team. I am. I had those two turnovers that kept them and that was on me."
On the turnovers:
"Just uncharacteristic mistakes. I wouldn't say we were trying to force anything. We played our game and I made two bad decisions. I got hit while I was throwing one. It happens."
On the second half:
"Give credit to them. They are a really good offense. They started to score and you can't hold down an offense like that for an entire game. We just had to keep scoring. You have to feel good about the victory though. 10-0, it can't get any better."
On setting the passing yards record:
"I think it's a testament to all the hard work that we put in. We still have hopefully five more games. Those are just numbers on the stat sheet to us. Hopefully we have all wins."
On his wide receivers:
"We have great targets. They are special players that are going to play for a long time. I'm lucky to have them on my team. And they are great people and hard workers too. That means more than anything else on the football field."
LSU TIGHT END THADDEUS MOSS
"I think we did. Again, I don't think we played our best game. The stats say otherwise but offensively I don't think we played our best game. That's probably the biggest takeaway from this. You take all of these numbers and we didn't even play our best ball. We have yet to play our best ball. We'll watch film on Monday and get everything fixed before next week."
