Ole Miss Ends Homestand 4-0 Behind Defense
OXFORD, Miss. – The Ole Miss men's basketball team led for almost the entire game and ended its season-opening homestand with a 65-52 victory over Seattle Tuesday night. The Rebels (4-0) built up their lead to as much as 28 points in the second half, while holding the Redhawks (2-4) to a 28.6 percent (16 of 56) clip from the field.
KJ Buffen scored 11 of his team-high 13 points in the second half after picking up early foul trouble in the first 11 minutes of the contest. The sophomore forward also pulled down a team-high eight rebounds to go along with a pair of steals. Breein Tyree stuffed the stat sheet with 10 points, six rebounds and five assists to get the Rebels rolling in the first half and continuing into the final frame. Fellow guard Bryce Williams added a career-high eight points in 22 minutes off the bench.
As a team, Ole Miss shot 42.9 percent (21 of 49) from the field. Making the most of their opportunities at the charity stripe, the Rebels went 19 of 22 (86.4%) on their free throws.
Terrell Brown paced the Redhawks with 17 points and four assists, fighting through foul trouble to score 13 second half points. Delante Jones and Morgan Means both tallied seven points and six rebounds for Seattle.
Balanced scoring led to an early Ole Miss lead. The first eight buckets to find the bottom of the net came from eight different Rebels. Tyree was the primary distributor, dishing out four assists. A 9-9 tie was broken as Ole Miss went on an 11-0 run over a two-minute stretch. Tyree started it with a jumper and ended it by knocking down a pair of free throws.
Seattle responded with five straight points before going scoreless for nine minutes. The scoring drought allowed the Rebels to increase their advantage to 16 with another double-digit run. Limiting the Redhawks to a single field goal over the final 10:29 minutes of the opening half, Ole Miss took a 30-17 lead into the break.
The Redhawks shot just 25.0 percent (7 of 28) in the first 20 minutes, while turning over the ball 10 times in large part due to the Rebels' 1-3-1 zone defense. Ole Miss took advantage of the miscues, holding a 10-0 advantage in points off turnovers. The Rebels kept Seattle off the free throw line as well, committing only five fouls in the first half.
Coming out of the locker room, Ole Miss doubled up the visitors, 34-17, after a rare four-point play from Devontae Shuler. The junior guard drilled a corner three while being fouled, and then converted at the line. A 10-0 run started the second half, and Seattle only broke it with a single free throw. The double-up continued, 48-24, before the Rebels increased their lead to 28 points with 11:09 to play.
With the four-game homestand coming to a close, the Rebels will hit the road for the first time this season on Saturday (Nov. 23). Ole Miss travels up the road to renew the rivalry with No. 16 Memphis at FedEx Forum. Tipoff is slated for 12 p.m. CT on ESPN3.
