Sophomore Ranked No. 25 on International Side
NORMAN, Okla. – Ole Miss Men's Golf sophomore Sarut Vongchaisit has been named to the rankings for the Arnold Palmer Cup, coming in at No. 25 in the first round of rankings for the 2020 event.
The Arnold Palmer Cup, which was co-founded by Arnold Palmer and the Golf Coaches Association of America, is a Ryder Cup-style tournament featuring the top men's and women's university/college golfers matching the United States against a team of International players.
Vongchaisit is in contention to be selected for the 2020 running of the tournament, which will be played July 3-5 at Lahinch Golf Club in Lahinch, Ireland.
The top six golfers from the final rankings in the spring from both the United States and International men's and women's team – 12 total golfers – will be among the 24 individuals selected to compete in the Arnold Palmer Cup.
Using Golfstat's NCAA player rankings as a base, the Arnold Palmer Cup Ranking awards bonus points for wins and high finishes and a penalty for poor finishes. The ranking also contains a strength of schedule component.
The remaining six men's and women's spots for the United States will consist of five committee selections, including at least one non-Division I golfer, and a coaches' pick. The balance of the International team will include the men's and women's winners of The R&A Scholars Tournament, four committee selections and a coaches' pick.
The next Arnold Palmer Cup rankings will be announced Feb. 20.
Vongchaisit was a steady No. 2 for the Rebels all fall, finishing in the top-20 four times. He led off his sophomore campaign with a tie for tenth at the Badger Invitational before his best individual finish at the Windon Memorial, where he tied for ninth.
The Bangkok, Thailand, native finished four tournaments at par-or-better and carded 11 rounds par-or-better, including six rounds in the 60s. Vongchaisit is 13th in the conference in scoring (70.67).
Braden Thornberry, currently a member of the Korn Ferry Tour, was the last Rebel to play in the Arnold Palmer Cup. The former No. 1 ranked amateur in the world helped Team USA defeat the International team to capture the 2018 cup in France.
The Rebels are in the middle of a winter break before returning to the course Feb. 16-18 for the Puerto Rico Intercollegiate in Rio Grande, Puerto Rico.
