Ole Miss Opens Spring Season Feb. 16 in Puerto Rico
OXFORD, Miss. – The Ole Miss men's golf team wrapped up their fall season at the Hoakalei Country Club Invitational on the island of Oahu, shooting a 20-under as a squad to come home with a runner-up finish.
The Rebels notched their second runner-up finish and fourth top-four of the fall in Hawaii. The first five events of the season had its ups and downs, but one thing for sure if you look at all the individual performances and record team scores, is this young team is ready for the championship spring season. There were seven career-setting performances by Rebels this fall: two career-best finishes, three career-low rounds, and two career-low 54-hole scores.
The team shot the second lowest round in program history during the first round in Hawaii, an 18-under 270. The Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate saw Ole Miss shoot the seventh-lowest 54-hole score in program history, a 23-under 841 with three rounds under par including a 15-under 273 second round that was the fourth-lowest 54-hole score in program history.
"I was really pleased with how these guys handled our fall schedule and the consistency that they have shown out of the gates," head coach Chris Malloy said.
Jackson Suber quickly established himself as a new leader during the first few months of his sophomore campaign. He finished no worse than tied for 19th this fall with six rounds in the 60s, leading the Rebels on the leaderboard in four of the five tournaments. Suber is fifth in the conference in scoring at 69.87 strokes.
His fall was highlighted by three top-5 finishes. Suber tied for fourth in the opening tournament at the Badger Invitational thanks to a final round 7-under 65, which tied his career low. This wouldn't be the last time Suber shot 65 in the fall, as he fired another 7-under during the second round of the Jerry Pate National Intercollegiate.
"Suber has proven that he can compete to win each and every tournament," Malloy said. I expect him to break through and get an individual win this spring."
Sarut Vongchaisit became the second Rebel to shoot 65 this fall when he opened up with a 7-under round at the Jerry Pate National Intercollegiate, setting a new career-low. Vongchaisit appeared in the lineup every event this fall, finishing top 25 in every outing, highlighted by a career-best finish at the Windon Memorial Classic when he tied for ninth.
"Sarut continues to improve each semester," Malloy said. "He was incredibly consistent for us this fall and I look for more of the same from him this spring."
It didn't take long for Veeti Mahonen to make his Ole Miss debut. Mahonen played as an individual in the first event of the fall, tying for 29th in Wisconsin. The Kirkkonummi, Finland, native ended the fall the fifth-ranked freshman in the SEC in terms of scoring, averaging 71.87 strokes per 18. Mahonen ended his first fall season in the red and blue with a career finish, tying for sixth overall in Hawaii with three rounds under par (68-71-69).
"Veeti really improved throughout the fall," Malloy said. "He seemed to get better with each event and as you saw led us in Hawaii. He is starting to get more comfortable with his surroundings and there is no doubt he is poised for a great spring"
Jack Gnam appeared in the top four of the lineup all fall, earning a career-best finish at the Windon Memorial Classic, tying for ninth.
The championship season begins in the spring as the Rebels get back on the course in February for the Puerto Rico Classic (Feb. 16-18) in Rio Grande, Puerto Rico before heading back to the Cabo Collegiate (Mar. 1-3) in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico.
