Rebels Fall 3-1 to (RV) Missouri on Senior Night

11/27/2019 | Volleyball

OXFORD, Miss. --   In their final home match of the season, Ole Miss Volleyball (14-14, 6-11 SEC) delivered a battle with (RV) Missouri (20-7, 13-5 SEC), but ultimately fell 3-1 (23-25, 25-22, 19-25, 21-25).

The Rebels hit at a .270 hitting efficiency, their second-highest in a SEC match this season only to their first bout with Missouri, when they hit at a .294 clip.

It was Senior Night, as the four veterans of the 2019 roster- outsides Emily Stroup and Leah Mulkey, middle blocker Nayo Warnell, and libero Nicole Purcell- were honored both before and post game.

Stroup led the squad with 14 kills, while Mulkey added 10. Warnell posted six kills on a .400 hitting percentage, adding four blocks. Purcell tallied 18 digs, widening the gap even further with her league-leading 543 on the season.

Sophomore Aubrey Sultemeier was also productive, registering nine kills on a .353 clip and also posting four rejections. Junior Lauren Bars dished out 35 assists to accompany 12 digs, tallying her league-leading 16thdouble-double of the season. Bars also recorded seven kills on a stellar .583 efficiency.

A six-point run from the Tigers presented Ole Miss with an early deficit in the opening stanza, as Missouri went up 10-5 and then 12-6.

The Rebels immediately began to chip away, rallying for four straight points, including a Mulkey kill and solo rejection from Sultemeier, narrowing the gap to 16-13. A set of 3-0 runs from the Rebs continued to help with the comeback, as a block from Warnell brought the squad to within one at 22-21.

Warnell again denied, this time teaming up with sophomore Lauren Thompson, to keep Ole Miss just one point away at 23-22, but the Tigers were able to hold on, picking up the match advantage at 25-23.

The Rebels started the second set with the upper hand. A kill from Sultemeier followed by a pair of blocks (with Sultemeier part of the rejecting duo on both) handed Ole Miss three points in a row and an 8-6 cushion.

The Rebels continued to maintain control, building a lead by as many as six points at 19-13 after a 4-0 run, featuring the duo of Bars (two kills and a block) and Sultemeier (kill and a block).

The Tigers threatened, trimming the deficit to 20-17 and after a Stroup slam brought the Rebs to set point, Missouri picked up back-to-back points to stay alive before Mulkey sealed the set in favor of Ole Miss, 25-22.

Early in the third set, Ole Miss used kills from Sultemeier, Stroup, Bars, and Thompson to go up 7-5, but five consecutive points from the Tigers brought them to tie and take the lead at 10-7.

Another 5-0 run for Mizzou increased their lead by seven points, but the Rebels continued to claw back, narrowing the lead to 19-15 after the "Laurens" each registered a kill in between a Tiger attack error.

Missouri fired back with three straight points to add cushion at 23-16, and despite back-to-back points for the Rebels, the Tigers regained the match lead with a 25-19 third frame.

The Tigers used a series of runs in the fourth to build an early advantage and maintain it, going up by as many as seven points at the 17-10 mark. Ole Miss again climbed back, relying on the veteran arms of Mulkey, Warnell, and Stroup, as well as Sultemeier's hot swinging, to narrow the gap to two just two points at 23-21.

Missouri responded with back-to-back points to take the set 25-21 and the match 3-1.

UP NEXT
