Rebel Punter Tabbed to List that Honors Nation’s Top Former, Current Walk-On

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Ole Miss junior Mac Brown was named a nominee for the Burlsworth Trophy, the organization announced on Tuesday.

The Burlsworth Trophy is given to the most outstanding football player who began his career as a walk-on and has shown outstanding performance on the field.

Brown, who is on the watch list for both the Ray Guy Award and the Wuerffel Trophy, ranks fifth in the Southeastern Conference with an average of 44.3 yards per punt. Brown has tallied 10 50-plus yard punts on the year and 16 that have landed inside the 20-yard line. He also has 14 punts go for fair catches last year.

The Eden Prairie, Minnesota, native posted a season-high average of 49.5 yards on four punts in the Rebels' SEC opener vs. Arkansas (Sept. 7). Against No. 11 Auburn, Brown tallied eight punts for a 42.6 yards per punt average, including three inside the 20-yard line. He has posted at least one punt greater than 50 yards in seven of Ole Miss' nine games.

In the award's tenth year, the Trophy is named in honor of Brandon Burlsworth, former University of Arkansas Walk-On and All-American offensive lineman. Each nominee must have begun his first season of participation with FBS (D1) football program without financial aid of any kind from his university's athletic department.

The Brandon Burlsworth Foundation, in conjunction with Springdale Rotary Club, will host an awards ceremony on Dec. 9, 2019, in Springdale, Arkansas, to honor the three finalists and to announce the 2019 winner.
