Jalen Julius and Snoop Conner Meet with Media

OXFORD, Miss. – Coming off a narrow defeat at No. 11 Auburn, Ole Miss football will get a break from Southeastern Conference action this week as the Rebels host New Mexico State.

Senior safety Jalen Julius and freshman running back Snoop Conner met with the media Tuesday to talk about their seasons so far, as well as the challenge ahead as the Aggies come into town.

AIR RAID AGGIES
The Ole Miss defense will be challenged in the secondary this week against a potent New Mexico State passing offense. The Aggies are averaging just over 38 passing attempts per game, which will keep Jalen Julius and Co. busy on the back end.

"We've just got to step up in the secondary, stop their passing game," Julius said. "For the most part, that's what they like to do a lot. They've got a couple playmakers out there, so we're just going to have to lock in and focus."

The contest will serve as a solid precursor for next week's matchup with No. 2 LSU, but even when the Aggies bring an 0-8 record to Vaught-Hemingway Stadium on Saturday, the Rebels won't be looking ahead to next week.

"We just try to keep it one week at a time. We don't want to overlook anybody," Julius said. "We're just focusing in week by week.

GETTING OVER THE HUMP
Of the Rebels' six losses this season, five have come by 11 points or fewer and four have been decided by just one score. But Ole Miss is keeping a positive mentality, knowing that the narrow losses show one thing: the team is close to turning the corner.

"It's kind of frustrating, but we know we're close, we're very close," Julius said. "Last week, we had a top 11 team and we played them all the way through. We know we're close, we just have to find a way to finish. It's always the little things like coach harps about, we just have to get better at those."

Despite the frustrating losses, Ole Miss isn't discouraged. The mood in the locker room remains positive, said the senior safety Julius.

"We're still great. We still love each other," Julius said. "We don't even think about it. We just go into the next week, preparing and trying to win."

GROUND GAINS
Ole Miss will likely lean heavily on its ground game to try and pick up that win this weekend. The Rebels lead the SEC and are 17th nationally at an average of 225.2 yards per game on the ground. Meanwhile, the Aggies rank second-to-last in the nation against the rush, allowing 263.5 yards per game.

The Rebels could be without their first-string running back this weekend. Scottie Phillips went down with an ankle injury on his first carry against Auburn and remains questionable. That could mean more carries for freshmen Jerrion Ealy and Snoop Conner. Both rookie runners have made a tremendous impact in their first seasons.

"We are always competing against each other, making each other better," Conner said. "We're young right now. You have some guys who've never played. We just have to keep growing and getting better at our craft."

Ole Miss and New Mexico State are set for a 3 p.m. CT kickoff Saturday on SEC Network.
