Ole Miss Picks Up Three Wins on Friday in the Desert

LAS VEGAS – Temperatures may be cooling off back home, but the Ole Miss women's tennis team sizzled in the desert on Day One of the Rebel Tennis Women's Invitational on Friday.
 
The Rebels tallied a trio of wins in the singles draws of the event, hosted by UNLV at the Fertitta Tennis Complex. Seniors Alexa Bortles and Tereza Janatova and junior Sabina Machalova were all victorious and advanced to invitational flight semifinals.
 
Bortles got past Antonia Balzert of Colorado in two sets, 6-4, 6-2 in the first win.
 
Janatova faced another Pac-12 foe in Utah's Madison Tattini and went the distance. The Rebel veteran created an all-important 1-0 lead after claiming the first set 6-1. Tattini answered with a 6-4 winner in set two, but Janatova was able to close out the match with the same score in the third.
 
The No. 56 ITA ranked player of Sabina Machalova only dropped three games in her singles match. She downed Georgia Tech's Victoria Flores, 6-2, 6-1 for the third Rebel victory.
 
In doubles play, Katya Hersh and Anya Lamoreaux of Utah edged out the No. 17 ITA ranked doubles tandem of Bortles and Machalova, 8-6.
 
Action continues Saturday with semifinals beginning at 12 p.m. CT. Bortles/Machalova will follow in a doubles consolation match.
 
The invitational features student-athletes from Arizona, Colorado, Georgia Tech, Kansas, Oregon, Utah, UNLV and Ole Miss competing in five flights of singles and two flights of doubles.
