Postgame Quotes vs. New Mexico State
11/9/2019 | Football
Ole Miss 41, New Mexico State 3
OLE MISS HEAD COACH MATT LUKE |
"It was good to get a lot of those guys in at the end of the game. Guys that sacrifice and walk-ons that are on the look teams. It's fun to see everyone on the sideline genuinely happy for those guys going in there. For them to get some plays, it's really good to see. They work all year and to see the looks on their faces. All of them said thank you. All of them wanted the opportunity to get on the field, so I'm really happy for all of them."
On the second half:
"I thought we played pretty clean. I thought the energy was maybe a little down in the first half. I don't think we punted, so that was a good thing. The defense in the second half the set the tone and got off of the field with some three-and-outs. I thought that was good and it kind of put the game out of reach there."
On John Rhys Plumlee:
"He waited and took advantage of his opportunity when it came. He made some plays and I thought he managed the game well. I was happy to see him convert on some fourth downs through the air and hit Elijah (Moore) on some passes. Still a lot of plays we can continue to get better at."
On Matt Corral:
"He's handled this unbelievably. Especially in the first half when he didn't get any snaps. But when his number was called, he stepped in there and was ready. He had a nice seam route to (Jason) Pellerin on a touchdown scoring drive. Again, we'll need him these next two games."
On Jerrion Ealy and Snoop Conner:
"It's really fun to see. Snoop (Conner) runs really physically in between the tackles. It was good to see Jerrion (Ealy) run that way too. They broke some big plays and some explosive plays. With that zone read, they hit and attacked a lot of different areas. It was good to see that."
On the defense:
"Those guys came ready to play. It doesn't matter who you're playing, three points is a great game. Really happy that those guys were able to get off of the field."
On LSU:
"We're finishing the season with our two biggest rivals. Regardless of what happens with the Alabama game, they are going to come in ranked in the top-10, maybe as the number one team in the country, coming to our place. We have to focus on us and get prepared to go play."
OLE MISS DEFENSIVE LINEMAN BENITO JONES |
"We worked on doing the small things right and no matter what level of competition it is, go out and play football the way we are supposed to play."
On the defensive pride:
"It's really shocking and I am really proud of it. We will continue to get better."
On LSU:
"LSU is a great team and you have to do the small things right. Just have to go out and play hard as we can."
OLE MISS RUNNING BACK SNOOP CONNER |
"I feel like I did alright. There were some things I could have done better but I feel I was pretty good."
On the offense:
"It's pretty fun running the football. Especially when you have John Rhys Plumlee. He opens it up when you're running the ball."
OLE MISS QUARTERBACK JOHN RHYS PLUMLEE |
"I have been blessed with speed and pretty good vision as well. So, when you break that initial line you only got two or three guys to make miss. So, if you can make them miss with an angle, it's much easier than trying to bob and weave through everyone."
On his relationship Matt Corral:
"We are both competitors and we want to win. That's the main thing. When he was in there, I was supporting him one hundred percent. And I know when I went in there, he was supporting me one hundred percent. It really helped me. He has been a really big help for me this season doing the little things right, like carrying out a fake, he will help me. Or if they are rolling to a coverage that I didn't see, Matt (Corral) usually will pick it up and tell me and let me know about it. He is a one-of-a-kind individual and a special teammate to have."
NEW MEXICO STATE HEAD COACH DOUG MARTIN |
"Coming in, we knew Ole Miss' defense was really impressive. We played Alabama the second game of the year, and in my opinion, you could switch the jerseys and there's no difference. Those guys are every bit as good as Alabama on that side of the ball. They have tremendous speed. Really well coached. They are just a really sound football team."
On players that stood out:
"I thought some guys played really well. Outside Linebacker Rashie Hodge Jr. has gotten better each week, and really played well for us. Running back Jason Huntley played pretty good. We were just overmatched upfront and that made thing difficult."
On Ole Miss:
"I think they are headed in the right direction. Coach (Matt) Luke is doing a great job from when he first took this program over. The talent level has really risen in the last couple years and they play hard. Those kids play physical. They play fast. They play hard and they have a bright future ahead them."
NEW MEXICO STATE LINEBACKER RASHIE HODGE JR. |
"Defensively, we have to come out and make tackles. We are always there, we have just have to make more tackles and be more aggressive to the ball."
On if they saw anything they didn't expect:
"No, they did not. Everything they ran we had seen in practice. Like I said, we just messed up a lot and that's really it."
On improvements:
"We just have to come in and practice harder. Get into the film room more. I know personally, I have to get into the film room more but we just have to come out more aggressive and make tackles. We know what's going on and it just comes down to basic physics and basic football."
NEW MEXICO STATE RUNNING BACK JASON HUNTLEY |
"No, it was pretty basic honestly. Exactly what we thought and saw on film, we just did not execute."
On improvements:
"Execution when were out there on the field. We're doing a good job out there at moving the ball, but were not scoring and we need points to win so we definitely can do better at that."
