No. 8 Ole Miss Rifle Posts 4664 Points at NCAA Qualifier

Jillian Zakrzeski led the Rebels with an 1174 Saturday
JACKSONVILLE, Ala. – With a berth to the NCAA Rifle Championships at stake, the No. 8 Ole Miss Rifle team continued its steady shooting with a 4664-point performance Saturday at the Gamecock Rifle Range in Alabama.
The Rebels tied their second-highest NCAA Qualifier match score in program history, outshooting host No. 10 Jacksonville State, 4664-4642. Both teams battled through three problematic targets throughout the day. It was the fifth consecutive season that Ole Miss shot alongside the Gamecocks with an NCAA berth on the line, and one of 12 NCAA Qualifiers being held across the country over the weekend.
However, the score of 4664 was not enough to make the top-eight team qualification. No. 12 Army tallied 4778 points and No. 13 Morehead State earned 4774 at other sites Saturday. Both teams surpassed the Rebels in the final rankings. The totals are determined by adding the NCAA Qualifier total with the top-three score average fired at three locations throughout the regular season.
Ole Miss entered the match with an average of 4671.67, ending with a 9335.67 total. Army finished with 9343.33 points, while Morehead State secured 9338.67. After a rough start, No. 6 Alaska Fairbanks pushed Ole Miss to the No. 9 spot when Liam Eberhart and Haley Castillo greatly improved their team's score in the second relay to tie Army's total.
Career day for Zakrzeski…
Freshman Jillian Zakrzeski did not seem phased in her first NCAA Qualifier. The rookie led all shooters with a personal-best 584 in smallbore and 1174 aggregate total. Her 584 was a five-point personal improvement and gives her a chance to qualify for Nationals as an individual in the event. Four shooters not on an NCAA qualifying team in each discipline (smallbore, air rifle) will compete at the national meet on March 8-9. Ole Miss has had at least one individual advance to the NCAA Rifle Championships the last seven years.
Big day for smallbore…
The Rebels recorded the second-highest mark of the season in smallbore, outshooting JSU, 2315-2306. Rounding out the scoring alongside Zakrzeski were Abby Buesseler (580), Harley Gardner (576), and Randi Loudin (575). Gardner and Loudin competed in their final NCAA Qualifier as decorated seniors. Junior Hayley Carroll had a big day, posting a career-best 582, as a non-counter. She also finished second overall with an 1168 and posted her best score in kneeling (195).
Air rifle roundup…
Zakrzeski and fellow freshman Erin Walsh were top shooters in air rifle, each producing a 590. Carroll (586) and Gardner (583) completed the Rebel scoring. Ole Miss won the event, 2349-2336.
