Rebels begin league play at No. 24 Florida
OXFORD, Miss. – Ole Miss Women's Tennis dropped its final non-conference match of the season, falling 6-1 to No. 21 UCF, who picked up their fourth straight contest at the William F. Galtney Indoor Tennis Center, located along Manning Way.
Things looked promising early for the Rebels with the doubles point, as the junior duo of Alexa Bortles and Cameron Kriscunas took their opening game to gain the upper hand. The pair continued to hold advantage, capitalizing on a couple perfectly placed balls from Bortles along the inside edge to continue to lead.
The same could not be said for the first two courts, as UCF made swift work to pick up the first point of the contest.
The bottom half of the Ole Miss singles lineup each took their opening game of singles action, as Bortles, classmate Tereza Janatova, and senior Allie Sanford all provided 1-0 early leads. Janatova held tight to her lead, picking up the first set, while Bortles and Sanford went through games of cat-and-mouse, the latter eventually falling in a tiebreak.
Both Bortles and Machalova seemed poised to upset seven-match win streaks for their respective opponents, going through back-and-forth affairs before the Knights rallied with momentum in the second sets and the Rebels fell in identical 6-3, 6-1 decisions. The loss snapped a four-match win streak for Bortles.
Playing through singles, 10-point third sets occurred for both Janatova and Jandric after each picked up their opener but dropped the second. The loss for Janatova was her first in her last five matches, while Jandric picked up the win to hand the Rebels their first point of the contest.
All eyes turned to Sanford, who continued to battle in the second set, with nearly each game coming to deuce before the Knights' Natalia Serrano found momentum and took the last two games.
