Rifle earns conference honors for ninth consecutive season
AKRON, Ohio – The Ole Miss Rifle team received honors at the Great America Rifle Conference Awards Banquet for the ninth consecutive season. Both Jillian Zakrzeski and Hayley Carroll earned GARC Air Rifle Honorable Mention, while Abby Buesseler was named Ole Miss Rifle Scholar-Athlete of the Year.
The awards were announced Thursday night ahead of the GARC Championships inside the University of Akron's InfoCision Stadium.
The top 15 athletes in the GARC earned First Team (1-5), Second Team (6-10), or Honorable Mention (11-15) recognition. Athletes were ranked based off the averages of eight GARC regular season matches.
Zakrzeski, a redshirt freshman from Constantia, N.Y., earned honorable mention after averaging 589.13 points per GARC match. She fired 590 or better on three occasions, helping the Rebels finish 4-4 and fourth in the league standings.
She also tallied 595 points twice this season in non-conference action. Her mark of 595 put her in a tie for fourth in the Ole Miss record book.
Junior Haley Carroll, hailing from Fairfax, Va, was awarded honorable mention after finishing the regular season with an average of 588.88. She fired a season- and career-high 593 on Jan. 13 in a win over Akron. Carroll reached the 590s in four GARC matches.
Sophomore Abby Buesseler was recognized as the Ole Miss Rifle Scholar-Athlete of the Year. The Ole Miss coaching staff bestowed Buesseler with the honor for her combined accomplishments in the classroom and in competition. The Biology major had the second-highest aggregate season average behind Zakrzeski.
