Karlo Kranic Swings Into SEC Freshman of the Week Honors

The rookie earned four total victories this past weekend in Montgomery

BIRMINGHAM, Ala.--   After totaling four victories and helping Ole Miss Men's Tennis land in the finals of the Blue Gray National Tennis Classic this past weekend, rookie Karlo Kranic has been dubbed the SEC Freshman of the Week, announced by the conference Wednesday afternoon.

The Osijek, Croatia, native earned his fourth straight singles win Saturday in the Rebels' thrilling takedown of No. 16 Alabama in the Blue Gray semifinals. His win Friday was a come-from-behind after dropping the opening set to win 4-6, 6-4, 6-2, and Saturday's 6-2, 6-3 win against Alabama provided the set up for the Rebels to clinch their fifth straight victory.

The upset over the Tide was the second Ole Miss upset over a Top 25 ranked opponent this season, the first coming against then-No. 20 Oklahoma State, which led senior Fabian Fallert to land SEC Player of the Week honors back in early February.

Kranic teamed up with fellow freshman Simon Junk for both doubles wins, with both victories giving Ole Miss the advantage, finishing first.

Kranic went 2-1 during the Classic, his loss to Arizona in the Championship just his second defeat of dual match play this season.

The award is the first of his career, and the first freshman honor for Ole Miss since future All-American Gustav Hansson in 2015.

Kranic and the Rebels begin league action this weekend, welcoming Kentucky Friday to Palmer Salloum Tennis Center.
