Jacobsen Dominates in the Circle, Puk Clubs Game-Winning Dinger at the Dish
OXFORD, Miss. – The Iowa connection of Molly Jacobsen and Jessica Puk carried Ole Miss to a 2-0 victory over No. 16 South Carolina on Sunday night, lifting the Rebels (22-8, 3-2 SEC) to a series-tying win against the Gamecocks (23-8, 2-6 SEC) at the Carolina Softball Stadium.
Jacobsen was masterful in the circle, scattering three hits and three walks over eight complete innings, striking out 10 Gamecocks on the way to her fourth complete game shutout of the season.
Despite the Rebels put a runner on base in every inning against Carolina, Ole Miss was unable to put any runs on the board through the regulation innings, stranding eight runners on base.
Jacobsen had to work some magic to get out of the third unscathed. After the Gamecocks led off the inning with back-to-back singles, a walk with two outs loaded the bases. Facing the dangerous Kennedy Clark, Jacobsen unleashed a nasty pitch in a 3-2 count, picking up the strikeout to get out of the frame.
The Rebels continued to put runners on base, but were unable to produce the clutch hit to drive runs home. Luckily for Ole Miss, Jacobsen kept doing her thing to keep the game deadlocked at zeroes.
With seven innings not enough for either team to score, the Rebels went into extra innings for the first time in 2019.
Once in extras, the game did not remain scoreless for long. Sitting on a 2-1 count, Puk took a mighty hack and didn't miss, crushing a solo home run cascading over the left field fence to break the deadlock.
With momentum in hand, Autumn Gillespie laced a triple just fair inside the right field foul line. Kelsha Loftin came in to run for Gillespie and easily scored on Brittany Finney's sacrifice fly to give the Rebels some insurance.
With a lead in hand, Jacobsen trotted back out and put the game to bed, collecting three quick outs to even the series and setup a rubber match for Monday at 6 p.m. CT. The game will once again be broadcasted on the SEC Network.
