OXFORD, Miss. – Ole Miss track & field put together a dominant effort, winning 10 individual event titles and recording several of the SEC's best performances this season at the Ole Miss Classic on Saturday.
Sophomore Peyton Weissmann had the top performance of the day for the Rebels in the final event. Weissmann, just one week after a difficult trip to Miami where he was unable to clear a bar at the Trailblazer Challenge, cleared a demonstrative career-best height of 5.35m (17-06.50) to win. Weissmann then took a shot at joining Olympian Sam Kendricks in the Rebel 18-foot club at 5.50m (18-00.50), but withdrew as the weather turned and strong winds began to blow across the Ole Miss Track & Field Complex.
His height today, though, of 5.35m (17-06.50) puts him atop the SEC leaderboard this season and No. 5 in the NCAA (No. 2 in the East Region), while also ranking him third in Ole Miss history behind Kendricks (5.81m/19-00.75; 2013) and Baker Vinci (5.43m/17-10; 1985)
Cole Colozzo also set a PR in the event for the second consecutive outing, finishing tied for second at 5.00m (16-04.75) to push him into a tie for eighth all-time at Ole Miss, No. 20 in the East Region and No. 7 in the SEC.
Lindsey Murray, fresh off of a victory last weekend at the Trailblazer Challenge, continued her excellent start to her final collegiate season in the pole vault. The senior won the event for the second straight week, and this time did so with a mark of 4.22m (13-10.00) which is a season-best and is the top-height in the SEC this season – currently putting her No. 5 in the NCAA and No. 3 in the East Region.
Saturday also saw another Ole Miss school record come tumbling down. Less than one day after Mark Robertson took down the men's 10K record at the Raleigh Relays last night, sophomore Anna Elkin broke the school record in the non-standard 3,000-meter race – leading a dominant women's effort. Elkin won at the new Rebel record time of 9:43.51, and was followed in succession by Ylvi Traxler (second, 9:49.45), Courtney Hopkins (third, 10:12.51), Emma McClellan (fourth, 10:17.41) and Brooke Gilmore (fifth, 10:31.49).
The Rebel men had an equally impressive team showing in the 800-meter, where Ole Miss claimed the top three spots. Cade Bethmann, running for the first time since earning First-Team All-American status at the NCAA Indoor Championships in the distance medley relay, led the way for Ole Miss. The sophomore ran the SEC's fastest time this season at 1:48.96, which is the 11th-best time in school history – as well as No. 11 in the NCAA and No. 9 in the East Region.
Bethmann was followed by fellow indoor DMR All-American Griffin Riley (second, 1:50.76; No. 33 East Region), Everett Smulders (third, 1:51.03) and Baylor Franklin (fifth, 1:53.92).
The Rebel women's sprinters put together another strong outing as a unit in the 100-meter dash. Freshman Brandee Presley ran yet another PR to win at a wind-legal 11.56 (+1.5) – the 10th-best time in school history that also puts her No. 29 in the NCAA and No. 20 in the East Region. Fellow freshman Kelly Rowe notched a PR of her own in second place at 11.62 (+1.5), the 14th-best time in Rebel history that also ranks her No. 37 in the NCAA and No. 23 in the East.
Freshman Kenney Broadnax also had a day to remember, winning the 110-meter hurdles with a PR time of 14.08 – which clipped nearly half a second off his previous best of 14.54 set last week. This mark ranks sixth in school history, seventh in the SEC, and first among freshmen in the SEC. Currently, Broadnax comes in at No. 23 on the NCAA and No. 14 on the East Region lists.
Jayda Eckford hopped in on the freshman fun, winning the 400-meter dash at 53.98 in her first collegiate outdoor 400-meter race. She already ranks eighth all-time at Ole Miss at that time, as well as No. 31 in the NCAA and No. 22 in the East.
Underclassmen throwers Joseph Benedetto and Chris Long represented the Rebel men well in the hammer throw. Benedetto won the event with a personal best 57.79m (189-07) in the hammer, which is the ninth best in school history, while Long threw a PR of 55.09m (180-09) to finish third, which places him 10th on the all-time list. Both currently sit in contention for the NCAA East Regional, with Benedetto slotted at No. 24 and Long at No. 48.
Two Rebel women ran the 3000-meter steeplechase for the first time in their careers, and both put together all-time performances. Sophomore Maddie King led the way, winning the event and finishing in 10:40.89, the eighth-fastest time in school history and 23rd-best in the NCAA. Freshman Morgan Claire Rose came in third at 11:22.52, the 10th best time in Ole Miss history.
Ole Miss closed out the action on the track with a win in the men's 4x400-meter relay. The quartet of Christian Yancey, Griffin Riley, Baylor Franklin and John Rivera Jr. cruised to a four-second win at 3:16.83.
Ole Miss returns to action April 5-6 for the Spec Towns Invite at the University of Georgia.
