Briggs Leads Rebels on Day One at Old Waverly

4/15/2019 | Men's Golf

WEST POINT, Miss. – The Ole Miss men's golf played 36 holes Monday afternoon, teeing it up in the Old Waverly Collegiate Championship. The Rebels (284-278—562) sit in a third at 14-under heading into the final 18 holes Tuesday at Old Waverly Golf Club in West Point. Every Rebel is in the top-30 individually, led by senior Beau Briggs who is tied for fourth.

The Rebels came out firing on all cylinders on the front nine this morning, shooting 8-under as a team thanks to 11 birdies and an eagle. Ole Miss owned hole No. 9 during the first round, going 5-under as a team (three birdies, one eagle) before making the first turn and ended up shooting an opening round 284 (-4).

The Rebels didn't back down, taking back the tournament lead on holes 6 through 8 on the second 18 of the day thanks to birdies from Wegener, Seiple and Gnam. Ole Miss ended the day shooting a 10-under second round, just one off the program's best team score at the tournament, and sit eight shots back of first place ULM (278-276—554). The Warhawks used a 12-under second round, which tied the tournament record, to grab the lead heading into the final day.

The Rebels are second in the field in total birdies with 41 and first in par-5 scoring as a team, going an incredible 20-under through the first 36 holes.

"It was a good day for us. We were looking to get that confidence back after our last time out, and I certainly think the guys did that," head coach Chris Malloy said. "We shot ourselves in the foot a few times in that first round, but we battled back. What I loved about it was all five of our guys were in it and playing well."

"We are very familiar with this golf course, we have come down here quite a bit this year. Familiarity helps, especially on the greens. These guys are playing good golf right now so that combination goes a long way."

Briggs is tied for fourth individually after the first 36 holes. The senior was solid in the morning with an even par 72, and caught fire in the afternoon shooting a 6-under 66, tying his career-low round as a Rebel. The 66 is the fifth lowest round in the tournament's history and ties Braden Thornberry for lowest round by a Rebel at the event. He ended his morning round with a birdie on the difficult 18 before starting round two with a pair of birdies to make it three straight. With seven birdies and only one bogey in the afternoon, Briggs went low to help Ole Miss climb the leaderboard.

"The putter was great today," Briggs said. "I was patient all day, made some good putts, chipped in twice so that helped the score for sure. It was patience all day. I grinded through the first round, and it came full circle in the afternoon."

Jack Gnam opened up with a bogey-free career-low 3-under 69 to get in the top-10 individually after the first 18. The freshman parred his first six holes until making birdie on the par-5 9th hole. He went 2-under on his last 12 holes, completing his round without a miscue on the scorecard. Gnam is tied for 16th after a second round even-par 72 in the afternoon.

Jackson Suber ended his first 18 with a great up-and-down to cap off a 2-under 70. The freshman started his second round with a birdie and two miscues, but got back on track finishing his last 14 holes of the day at 3-under.

Cecil Wegener chipped in at No. 7 for birdie, part of back-to-back birdies during his first round 73 (+1). The sophomore bounced back in the afternoon with a 1-under 71.

Josh Seiple shot a first round 2-over 74 that saw only five pars on his card. He added four birdies as well as an eagle on the par-5 9th hole, holing it from the bunker. The senior followed that up with a 2-under 70 and went 6-under on the par 5's today, which ranks second among the field.

Final round play begins tomorrow morning with tee times for the Rebels starting at 9:40 a.m. CT. Ole Miss will be paired with players from ULM and Vanderbilt.
