Jillian Zakrzeski Places Seventh at National Junior Olympic Rifle Championships

4/16/2019 | Rifle

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Ole Miss redshirt freshman Jillian Zakrzeski finished seventh best in the nation Monday for Women's Air Rifle at the National Junior Olympic Shooting Championships inside the Olympic Shooting Center at Colorado Springs.

Zakrzeski was in eighth place with 1236.9 points after the two days of qualification rounds. Her first-day score of 621.3 was a personal best for decimal scoring competitions. She earned an additional 3.5 points from her second-place finish in the final. The added points moved her into seventh overall out of 202 competitors with a 1240.4 total for the competition.

Macy Way was the overall winner, firing a two-day and finals score of 1247.6.

Also representing Ole Miss were underclassmen Kamilla Kisch (47th, 1221.3), Erin Walsh (54th, 1219.3), Sophia Cuozzo (82nd, 1209.3), and incoming athletes Claire O'Neel (49th, 1220.4) and Kristen Derting (99th, 1204.2).

Zakrzeski, Cuozzo and Kisch will now transition to the smallbore competition. The Women's Three-Position Rifle event competes Tuesday through Thursday. The finals will be held Thursday at 4:30 p.m. CT.

For the National Junior Olympics, USA Shooting uses a scoring system that combines two qualification rounds (two sixty shot matches scored with decimal scoring) combined with the results of one final.

The top eight scores in the two-day aggregate qualified for the final. Shooters received between 0.5 and 4 points added to their two-day total based on how they placed in the final. First place received 4 points, second place received 3.5, and so on.

The 202 athletes competing in Women's Air Rifle won their chance to compete at NJOSC because of their finishes at the state-level Junior Olympic matches. Overall, 607 athletes from 48 states will compete in Rifle, Pistol and Paralympic events throughout the three-week NJOSC. The NJOSC features the top 34 percent of all competitors in 2019 and will feature invitees that either won their state championship or were selected based on a score they attained. The competitors range in age from nine to 20 years old.

Marsha's Minute…
On Zakrzeski's performance…
"I was very happy to see Jillian (Zakrzeski) make the final (Monday). Her performance was really very good. She was in eighth place after the first five shots, but steadily improved. Six of her last 12 shots scored 10.6 or higher. The final format is quite different from the qualification round. Elimination of the lowest scoring competitors begins after just 12 shots. The competitors vying for first and second place shoot only 24 shots and the time limits are much shorter than during the qualification round. Today was Jillian's first final in a national competition. Her excellent performance was very much a milestone in her shooting career.

It takes a different skill set to do well in finals and Jillian showed she can excel. For this match the final added 3.5 points to her final score, but it is important to note that in NCAA National Championships and in international competitions, including the Olympic Games, the top three finishers in the final are the medalists."

On how the other Rebels competed…
"(The five other Rebels) were able to improve their scores on the second day and will benefit from this experience. Frankly, this is a tough match. There are so many competitors here and the altitude, with less oxygen available, forces most shooters to adjust their shot routines."
