Rebels Shoot 2-over 290 on Day Two, Sit in Seventh As a Team
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The No. 35 Ole Miss women's golf team shot a second round 2-over 290 on moving day Thursday at the SEC Championship in Birmingham, Alabama.
The Rebels sit right inside the cut line for making it to match play this weekend with one more round of stroke play set for Friday morning. Ole Miss sits in seventh after 54 holes and are second in the tournament with 121 pars as a team.
The top eight teams advance to match play over the weekend.
Julia Johnson sits in third places individually after a second round even-par 72. The sophomore from St. Gabriel, Louisiana, is at 3-under for the tournament, four strokes back of Florida's Marta Perez SanMartin
Every Rebel improved on day two, while Johnson remained steady.
"I thought we played well today with some really solid scores right out of the gate," head coach Kory Henkes said. "I'm proud of the team's fight on the back nine today going up against some really tough conditions with the wind."
"The game plan doesn't change for tomorrow," Henkes said. "You always have to play to win. The girls have a good mentality that you can't control anyone else on the course you can only control yourself, and we've done a good job of having that mindset all year."
Ellen Hutchinson-Kay put together a solid second round, shooting a 1-under 71. The freshman moved up nine spots into the top-10 individually. She leads the team 28 pars, including six straight on the tough back nine to cap off her round today.
"Ellen enjoys playing against the top players in our conference," Henkes said. "Nothing rattles her. She keeps a level head the entire round which is a great attribute and a big reason why she is an excellent golfer."
Johnson got off to a hot start for the second day in a row, scoring back-to-back birdies on holes three and four that pushed her into the individual lead early on. The sophomore finished with an even-par round and remains in the top-5 individually. She finished in eighth at her SEC Championship last year, firing a final round 3-under 69.
Conner Beth Ball bounced back with a 2-over 74. The sophomore was electric on the front-nine, going 4-under bogey-free before dropping six shots on the difficult back-nine. Ball made a team leading five birdies Thursday.
Freshman Macy Somoskey tallied a second round 1-over 73. The freshman went 1-under on the front and only had two miscues on the back with seven pars.
Kennedy Swann matched Ball with a 2-over 74 second round. The junior birdied the par-4 12th hole, which saw only four other players score birdie in the field of 70 today.
Final round of stroke play begins Friday with tee times for Rebels starting at 8 a.m. Ole Miss will be paired with LSU and Mississippi State.
