The Taylor Medal is the University’s Highest Academic Honor
OXFORD, Miss. – Ole Miss student-athletes Caroline Adams (volleyball) and Marisa Kutchma (soccer) were both awarded the Taylor Medal at a ceremony earlier this month, the highest academic honor awarded by the University of Mississippi.
Both Adams and Kutchma were also two of five Rebels named to the Who's Who list for the University of Mississippi for the 2018-19 academic year, joining the trio of Sakisha Dovey, Anna Elkin and Alex Enright of Ole Miss track & field.
Adams and Kutchma are the 19th and 20th Rebels to earn the Taylor Medal distinction since 2007. Ole Miss has had at least one Taylor Medal recipient every year since 2010 and have now had multiple honorees six times in that timespan.
Adams, a native of Lafayette, Louisiana, was a CoSIDA Academic All-District selection this past fall, a 2017 SEC Community Service Team selection and has been on the Chancellor's Honor Roll in each of her four seasons at Ole Miss with a perfect 4.0 GPA. Adams ranks second all-time in Rebel history with 1,454 digs and also holds the single-season record with 522 set during her junior year in 2017.
Adams graduated this past December with a degree in communication disorders, with plans to attend graduate school to study audiology. Adams is the second member of the Rebel volleyball team to ever earn the Taylor Medal after Aubrey Edie did so in 2017.
Kutchma, a native of St. Charles, Missouri, was named to the 2018 SEC Community Service Team this past fall while also being named a finalist for the prestigious Marshall Scholarship. In addition to her contributions in her four years on the pitch, Kutchma has put in considerable time in the community both in Lafayette County and back home in the St. Louis area.
Kutchma is the third Rebel soccer student-athlete to receive the Taylor Medal after Danielle Gray in 2017 and Ashley Ferree in 2007. Kutchma will graduate this spring with a degree in biology and hopes to join the Peace Corps.
Established in 1904 in memory of Marcus Elvis Taylor of Booneville, an honored 1871 UM alumnus, the Taylor Medal recognizes no more than 0.45 percent of all undergraduates, regardless of campus, for meritorious scholarship and deportment. Recipients must have at least a 3.90 grade-point average.
